DT Eddrick Houston (National Champion)

Not sure just especially in the secondary it just felt like Illinois was getting guys open. On the DL we were seeing guys like Jason Moore (who I seriously forgot about) which led to a TD drive late.

It adds up when we have 1 starter and 1 big time contributor out while also having CJ Hicks sitting out too.
The main issue to me was that they played vanilla and went with a lot of straight four-man even front rushes/containment strategies up front (and Altmyer didn't do anything on the ground), which resulted in Altmyer having days to scan the field. The secondary is fine. They were pretty vanilla offensively as well. Why, I don't know, but my guess is that the coaches thought our lines would be able to be pretty dominant even playing that way and they really weren't. I don't buy that Day "threw out" the Indiana tape. They may also be playing four-dimensional chess and wanted to make the game a lot closer than IU's beat down of UI to slow down creeping hubris.

In what way?
Jermaine had to play out of position and Sanchez had to play the whole game. Though going from Lorenzo to Jermaine wasn’t really a step down at nickel, Sanchez is a pretty good step down from Matthews at corner. Lorenzo has been shockingly good all year at nickel. You can tell there were some coverage gaps in zone that Jermaine made up for by being a freak. Having people out of position is also probably why they played more vanilla on defense and why we saw more 4-3-4. When we go vanilla other teams can score. What makes this defense elite is the complex coverages and that we have the players that can run them.

In the end it didn’t matter on the scoreboard and it got Sanchez good reps and Mathews good nickel reps if we need it at some point. So we are likely better because of it.
