DT Cameron Heyward (6x Pro Bowl, 3x All Pro, Pittsburgh Steelers)

Heyward graduates

Whether Joe Bauserman, the backup to Pryor the past two seasons, will be the starting quarterback for the season opener remains to be seen, but he now can boast of being an alumnus. The fifth-year senior was one of 15 current or former OSU football players to take part in graduation ceremonies yesterday.
Joining him were three of OSU's departed captains from last season: Cameron Heyward, Brian Rolle and Dane Sanzenbacher.
"There was a lot of hard work involved, and now there is a feeling of gratitude because this is the reason I came to college, and to be the first in my immediate family (to gain a degree) is truly an honor," said Heyward, who was a first-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in April. "I have something to fall back on. It feels like a sense of entitlement to graduate from college."

Defensive end Cameron Heyward, the Steelers No. 1 pick, said he is excited to join his new teammates, but ?I?ll wait till [the players] decide what to do.?

Like all rookies who were drafted by NFL teams, Heyward has been unable to work with his new coaches during the offseason because of the lockout. But he said he does not think it will significantly hinder his development in his first season.

?It will be an adjustment, but I don?t think it will hold us back at all,? Heyward said last night from Columbus, Ohio, where he has been working out at his alma mater, Ohio State. ?There will be more dependency on the players who are already there and we?ll go from there. It?s not given to us. We have to go out and work hard. But I think everybody is excited to get back on the playing field.?

Steelers rookie Heyward is awaiting the end
By Scott Brown, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, July 24, 2011

The crowd had swelled to almost 100 people by the time Cameron Heyward settled into a chair outside Panera Bread at Westmoreland Mall.

The Steelers' 2011 first-round draft pick signed autographs for two hours Saturday in Greensburg ? and did so with the smile that seems to come as easily to Heyward as shedding blockers.

There is, of course, something else Heyward hopes to put a pen to in the coming days: a contract.

A short stretch of Route 30 is all that separated Heyward from St. Vincent College yesterday, but the 6-foot-5, 288-pound defensive end is still a ways from getting there. Heyward needs the NFL lockout to end and a quick resolution to his first contract negotiation before he can report to Steelers training camp.

"I want to get out there as soon as possible, learn the defense and get to know the guys," said Heyward, the 31st overall pick. "I'm going to take advantage of every opportunity I get."

Steelers sign 1st-round draft pick Cameron Heyward
By Scott Brown, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Friday, July 29, 2011

The Steelers have signed first-round draft pick Cameron Heyward.

Heyward, a defensive end from Ohio State, agreed to a four-year contract with a team option for a fifth year. Steelers will announce the signing at a 5:30 p.m news conference.

The Steelers have signed all of their draft picks except for Texas cornerback Curtis Brown, a third-round selection.

The 6-5, 288-pound Heyward was taken by the Steelers No. 31 overall last April.

Steelers lock up their No. 1 pick DE Heyward

Cameron Heyward raced into St. Bonaventure Hall, signed some papers, shook Dan Rooney's hand and was off.

The Steelers were 30 minutes into their first practice of training camp Friday, and the first-round pick out of Ohio State could only think of what his late father, former Pitt and NFL star Craig "Ironhead" Heyward, would say.

"Don't be late," Heyward said. "He would be pretty mad at me right now. He would be saying, 'Get your butt in there and get to work.' "

The Steelers and the defensive end agreed to a four-year deal worth $6.7 million. Later Friday, the team inked third-round pick Curtis Brown, a cornerback from Texas, to put all seven of their selections under contract.

"We usually do this before he hits the field, but Cam actually beat us to it," Steelers president Art Rooney II said during an introductory news conference.

Heyward missed less than an hour of the first scheduled practice but wasn't happy about it.

"Everything that has gone on, the sooner I can get in here, the better," he said. "I've been anxious. It has been so long, so I am excited to get back on the field and be a part of this team. I am a guy who likes to be out there 10 minutes early. I have to make it up. Right now, guys are ahead of me. I am sorry for being a little late."

Damn shame that team in the 43210 doesn't have this one to lead by example as they go through this year. While I'm sure that leaders will emerge, and have already done so, Cam was one hell of an ace in the hole for us for four years. Gonna miss him on and off the field.

LATROBE ? After practice while running extra sprints with a few of his new teammates, Cameron Heyward pulled off a sweaty jersey and revealed a torso void of tattoos.

Not that he has anything against anybody who wears body art. But he?s just never been the kind of guy who needs to express himself with tattoos. Not even at Ohio State, where a tattoo parlor helped bring down coach Jim Tressel and star quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

Never did Heyward, a former Buckeye defensive lineman, ever get caught up in the trap of exchanging football memorabilia for cash and free tattoos.

?No, I don?t need tattoos,? Heyward said Saturday after the Steelers? training camp practice. ?I just tried to stay clear of that whole thing. Those guys have to live with that. They have to learn from their mistakes.?

H is for here: Steelers future at DE has arrived
Hood, Heyward a hit
Wednesday, August 10, 2011
By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers saw the future of their defensive line last season when Aaron Smith was injured, and they liked what they saw. Ziggy Hood played so well in Smith's absence that the former No. 1 pick almost certainly will be like a fourth starter in their three-man line in 2011.

"Ziggy is just like a starter," said defensive line coach John Mitchell. "He's going to play quite a bit."

Hood's rapid emergence in his second season, when he started 13 games and had sacks in four of the final five games, is part of building the defensive line for the future.

Now the Steelers have launched phase two with rookie defensive end Cameron Heyward, their No. 1 pick from Ohio State. He will be used much in the same manner as when Hood was a rookie in 2009 -- getting four or five snaps a game to get him acclimated to Dick LeBeau's defense and accustomed to the pace of the NFL.

If he can progress at the same rate as Hood, or faster, the Steelers will consider their future restructuring right on schedule.

"He's a hard worker," Mitchell said of Heyward, drafted with the 31st overall pick. "What he's realizing now is, he might have been in shape to play at Ohio State, but he's not in shape to play in the NFL. There's a big difference. That slowed him down for the first couple days, but he's getting in better shape. You can see some of the quickness he has. And he's learning how to play with strength."

Like all rookies who couldn't go through an offseason program because of the lockout, Heyward is getting a crash course on playing defensive end with the Steelers -- an intricate role that requires a disciplined style to engage, read and get rid of the blocker.

Heyward is in the process of trying to combine that with his natural athletic ability, which has jumped out at the coaches on the practice field at training camp at Saint Vincent College. They are eager to get a better look at his talent and what he has learned when the Steelers begin their preseason Friday night in Landover, Md., against the Washington Redskins.

"I'm just trying to grasp this playbook now and take it one step at a time," said Heyward, son of the late former Pitt running back Craig "Ironhead" Heyward who lived up in Monroeville until he was 8. "The toughest thing is just understanding the pace of everything on the field. The plays, I think, I can learn. But it's just trying to get it all in.

"That's part of game, I get to learn from guys like Brett Keisel and Aaron Smith and these guys who have played in adverse situations. It's helping me because they're relating everything to me and it makes it easier on me."

Pittsburgh rookie Cam Heyward winning over vets with humble attitude
By Associated Press, Published: August 9

LATROBE, Pa. ? Ziggy Hood heard the name, knew the pedigree and wondered exactly what the Pittsburgh Steelers were getting into when they chose defensive lineman Cameron Heyward with the 31st pick in the NFL draft.

A first-round pick from Ohio State whose father Craig is a Steel City legend following his career at Pitt? That could lead to a combustible mix of ego and privilege, right?

Just not with Heyward.

The rookie doesn?t really do ego. He doesn?t do privilege either. Instead, you?ll find him doing the things that rookies ? even first-round picks ? are supposed to do during a first training camp. If he?s not carrying the pads of a veteran teammate off the field following practice then he?s picking up the tab for the defensive line?s late-night snacks.

?He?s a rookie, and he acts like a rookie,? said defensive tackle Casey Hampton. ?That?s a major thing. You kind of probably wouldn?t think that from his background but obviously his father and his mama did a great job of keeping him grounded.?

Heyward didn?t really have a choice. His father, Craig, mother Charlotte and older brothers Craig Jr. and Corey made sure Heyward knew his place.

It proved to be good preparation for life in the NFL. While confident in his abilities, Heyward doesn?t carry himself with a sense of entitlement. Good thing, because that wouldn?t go over well on a line littered with Pro Bowlers in a city where work ethic is the only currency that matters.

?He came in here, has put his hand in the dirt and was ready to work,? said defensive end Brett Keisel.

Defensive end Heyward impressive in first appearance
Saturday, August 13, 2011
By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

LANDOVER, Md. -- Defensive line coach John Mitchell probably would rather have a tax audit than pronounce a rookie ready to play in the National Football League.

And that probably isn't going to change anytime soon, either, even if the rookie happens to be the team's No. 1 draft choice.

Mitchell acknowledged earlier this week that defensive end Cameron Heyward, the Steelers' No. 1 draft choice from Ohio State, was "right where a rookie should be -- trying to learn everything" after two weeks of training camp. But he also said he will have to "wait and see" how Heyward performs in a game.

Mitchell got a pretty good indication in a 16-7 preseason loss Friday night to the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field -- and it might cause him to alter his assessment.

Even if Heyward's assessment of his performance wasn't very good.

"Terrible," Heyward said when asked how he played in his first NFL preseason game. "Individually, not good at all. I thought I screwed up a couple plays. I expect a lot out of myself."

Heyward might be overly hard on himself.

Like he has been at training camp, Heyward was one of the standouts for the opening preseason game, playing most of the first half on a line with Ziggy Hood and staying on the field until the end of the third quarter. And he looked very comfortable doing it.

Heyward finished with three unassisted tackles, one quarterback hurry and showed his athleticism by running down the line and stepping over blocks. What's more, he appeared to do a good job getting a push and disrupting plays in the backfield.

Notebook: Heyward, Scott come to blows
Posted: Sunday, August 14, 2011
By Mike Bires [email protected]

LATROBE ? Things got a little heated at practice Sunday when two of the biggest Steelers got into a scuffle.

At the end of a play during an 11-on-11 period, rookie defensive end Cameron Heyward (6-foot-6, 288 pounds) and tackle Jonathan Scott (6-6, 316) started swinging at each other. Several of their teammates had to rush in and restore order.

Neither Heyward nor Scott landed any serious punches. Neither were hurt and both said the matter would soon be forgotten.

?You know we?re all out here trying to get better,? said Heyward, the Steelers? first-round pick in this year?s draft. ?You need to be competitive and just have to battle some time.

?It?s part of the game. We are going to battle out here. Sometimes we are going to have guys getting after each other. It?s all in fun. We still love each other off the field.?

Scott, the first-team left tackle, agreed.

?It?s all football. No big deal,? he said. ?We all love each other. By the time I go to sleep tonight, I?ll have forgotten it even happened.?

Steelers DE Heyward brings intensity to field
By Scott Brown, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW

Steelers rookie defensive end Cameron Heyward has brought a high level of intensity to the practice field throughout training camp.
Chaz Palla | Tribune-Review

His face streaked with sweat, defensive end Cameron Heyward put down the helmet and shoulder pads he has been carrying as part of his rookie indoctrination.

Asked to put a wrap on his first NFL training camp ? and one of the stranger ones of the 46 that the Steelers have staged at St. Vincent College ? Heyward instead offered a correction.

"It's not over yet," he said late Tuesday afternoon. "We've got one more day."

The Steelers will indeed practice one more time before leaving Latrobe. And while Wednesday's drills are closed, it is pretty safe to say that Heyward will wring everything he can out of them.

His relentlessness is one of the things that stood out during the camp that lasted nearly three weeks. Heyward's all-out playing style landed him in practice scuffles on consecutive days this week. It also led to a sitdown with some of the Steelers' offensive linemen.

They talked to Heyward about stopping when the whistle blows during lineman-on-lineman drills, although starting left tackle Jonathan Scott said it was no big deal.

"It's just the intensity of playing football," Scott said. "He definitely goes hard every play and shows that fire. Cam's a good guy. The scuffles we may have had in practice, I left it there on the practice field."

Heyward scrapped with Scott on Sunday and guard Ramon Foster the next day.

"Sometimes our egos get the best of us, and we're just trying to compete," Heyward said.

If Heyward seemed hesitant to talk about his exchanges with some of the offensive linemen, chatty free safety Ryan Clark didn't hold back.

At one point during practice yesterday, Clark chirped at the linemen about Heyward simply playing hard. Afterwards, Clark said Heyward is "far ahead" of where he expected the former Ohio State star to be after the NFL lockout wiped out all offseason practices.

"The biggest thing is he knows how to work," Clark said, "a first-rounder who comes in here and not resting on his draft pick and says 'I want to be a part of this team and I want to contribute early.' "
