DT "Big Daddy" Dan Wilkinson (official thread)

Wilkinson fails to report to Denver

DENVER (AP) -- Dan Wilkinson failed to report to Denver, so the Broncos' trade with the Miami Dolphins was declared void Saturday.
The Broncos sent a sixth-round pick to the Dolphins on March 2 for the 14-year veteran defensive tackle. They extended an earlier deadline for the defensive lineman to report but when he failed to show up for his physical, the deal was dead.

'Big Daddy' now in small business
Auto repair is car buff Wilkinson's new field

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

LANCASTER, Ohio -- After 13 years in the NFL, former Buckeye great Dan Wilkinson plans to open a string of AAMCO service centers in southern Ohio.

His inspiration? A 1970 Cadillac he bought as a teenager for $250 and then restored.

"It was my high-school pride and joy," Wilkinson, 34, said recently at his station in Lancaster. "In the latter years of my playing career, I really looked at the automotive business."

Wilkinson opened the Lancaster operation in late October. It's the first of seven he plans in southern Ohio in the next few years; one in Chillicothe, on N. Bridge Street, is next in line.

Wilkinson said he has no partners in the projects. When all seven are open, he plans to rotate among them, possibly working at three each week.

"I'm going to be involved in the first shop to the seventh shop," he said. "My involvement will be hands-on."

I remember when Big Daddy came to tOSU. My first memory was when stories started coming out of the practices that it took two linemen to block him and I thought Holy Crap ! , we are gonna be bad. I don't think I ever saw him play anywhere that he wasn't double teamed unless the play was away from him.

Cutting the ribbon at Chuck E. Cheese's
Bart Mills
Published May 28, 2009

LIMA - Between the ringing bells, chiming chimes and the occasional excited squeal, the dining room of a Chuck E. Cheese's can be a tough place to concentrate. Still, Trenton Placie faced the Skee-Ball challenge with the concentration of a surgeon.

"It's a roll and hi-ya," he said, chucking the wooden ball toward the allusive center hole. "I want to do this all day."

And that is exactly what Ed Dixon and Dan Wilkinson want to hear. The two men officially cut the ribbon on their first Chuck E. Cheese's franchise Wednesday. It's a business Wilkinson enters with some valuable experience.

"I've always been a fan of the business model. Having a wife and five kids, I've spent more than my fair share of time here," said Wilkinson, a former football standout for The Ohio State University and the Cincinnati Bengals.

Best of the rest

Dan Wilkinson

As a Buckeye: "Big Daddy" played only two seasons at OSU (1992 and '93) but was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and All-America as a too-tough-to-block redshirt sophomore.

As a pro: Wilkinson was the No. 1 overall selection in the 1994 NFL draft, taken by the Cincinnati Bengals. He played 13 professional seasons with the Bengals, Redskins, Lions and Dolphins.

The skinny: Like a lot of former overall No. 1 picks (Tim Couch, Courtney Brown - and those are just Browns picks), Big Daddy never lived up to his selection. But he certainly was a serviceable pro, and long-lasting, with 182 career starts, 388 tackles and 54 1/2 sacks.

2 former Buckeyes investing in bank
Group plans to open office in central Ohio
By Mark Williams
The Columbus Dispatch Wednesday October 31, 2012

A group of investors that includes two former Ohio State University football players is buying a small Logan County bank with plans to expand it into central Ohio.

Buckeye Nation Interim said yesterday that it is buying Citizens Bank of De Graff, which dates to 1885 and operates in De Graff and Logan County, about 70 miles northwest of Columbus. The purchase price was $4 million.

Investors expect to open a loan office shortly after the deal closes in March in either fast-growing northern Franklin County or southern Delaware County, with plans to expand it into a full-service office.

Buckeye Nation?s investors include former OSU defensive lineman Dan ?Big Daddy? Wilkinson and quarterback Stanley Jackson.

Wilkinson, an All-American defensive lineman at Ohio State, was selected by Cincinnati as the No. 1 pick in the 1994 NFL draft. He played for Cincinnati, Washington, Detroit and Miami in a career that spanned 13 years.

Jackson played quarterback for the Buckeyes in the ?90s and then spent seven years in the Canadian Football League.

Wilkinson has become a real-estate developer in Baltimore and owns a Chuck E. Cheese?s franchise in Lima. As a small-business owner, he said, he has become frustrated in dealing with big banks, and that?s why he got involved in the deal.

?The process of dealing with big banks has become a nightmare from every aspect,? he said.

Wilkinson said he looks forward to the bank having a tight relationship with small-business owners and becoming a long-time partner that can provide guidance to small businesses.

?You just don?t have the kind of relationship with big banks,? he said. ?They rush you in and out. They string you along. The process is terrible.?
