Why not a lottery in other sports then?

The NHL already has a lottery.

In the NFL, no one wants the first pick, at least until they get a rookie Cap.

In MLB, it's usually not a big deal (except this year with Strasburg sp.) because A) it's such a crapshoot and B) It take's 3 years before most are even ready for the bigs.

I guess the easiest answer is that 1 superstar can change a franchise around in basketball, not so in the others. See Cleveland and LeBron, Orlando and Shaq, Washington and Kwame Brown.......oops.

Exactly. And teams know this. So imagine if there wasn't a lottery... that '73 Sixers team would have some serious company.

Ping Pong

Yes there is the tanking aspect, but what team made up of professional athletes will every attempt to lose? Well dadgumit, there must be some. Its a sad day if and when that happens. But, the ping pong ball lottery is the hokiest attempts at fairness I have ever seen.

anyone think this was pure lottery luck? Cleveland and Chicago won the FIRST PICK and got Rose and KIng James which, both were local kids.
Stern knows how to play the game for the NBA'S success.

Onething that still gets me is that Gasol trade to L.A. out of no where..
I grew up a LAKER fan but, now I'm all CAVS and why THE KING because, I watched him all through H.S and being an Akron star.

I don't think the Lakers had any idea that Marc Gasol was going to be that good. Of course, Pao helped in the short run while Kobe still has gas left in the tank, but Marc Gasol is going to be a damn fine player.

It's not the athletes that are tanking. Management sits these guys on the bench, comes up with faux injuries to keep them out of the lineup because they know they're too competitive to lose on purpose.

The trade definitely is looking better for the Grizz the further we get away from it. In the end it will probably work out well for both teams. Lakers win now, Grizz are good in a couple more years. Isn't there still another first round pick going to Memphis?
As a Cavs fan I don't think I would give up JJ (young player), Ben (contract), and 2 firsts for Gasol, but I'm sure I suggested that exact trade for Bosh.
