Downtime today (6/1/07)

Clarity

Getting to be a daily thing.

It seems highly likely we have some bad hardware. The first suspect is the ram.

At present, we're only online because our databases are on someone else's machine (particularly kind friend), ours not only crashes, but does its best to mangle the data as it does. The web is still on ours. The good news is that this sort of two machine system is really how a site our size is supposed to be configured. So I don't expect much of a performance drop, if any at all.

Sometime later tonight, they're going to pull 2 of the 4 sticks of ram out of our box, and fire it back up. Then we wait for it to die again. If it does, they switch the two in with the two out, and repeat. Through this process, hopefully we discover what's hosed.

It's probably more complicated than that, but they try to keep it in simple terms for me. Because the worst the machine and the site gets, the more I'm reduced to communicating in simple grunts, whistles, sobs, and forehead slaps.

So yes, there is bound to be more downtime, but it should be controlled downtime and relatively quick and painless, rather than the kind that sends 2987 (no joke) error emails to my inbox in a span of 20 minutes.

We'll get through this. Just want to thank the machine for doing this during the offseason, rather than, say, November.
