Didn't want to muck up the Jack Tatum thread, but, the news of his passing and reading about Mr. Tatum has struck a chord with me.
The diabtes... the loss of toes, then a leg... the constant infections.... with my father the loss of sight... then the internal organs being ravaged by the disease...
Its insidious, as it takes your extremities away... you can't exercise anymore to help keep yourself and you waste away... very difficult to watch.
Then the eyesight, and depression...
I can't say my father would have been much of a case study for anyone in denial. He was a smoker, overweight and notoriously sedentery.
Tatum though was an elite athlete.
They both died at age 61... of hauntingly similar circumstances, their hearts giving out after a long battle with a terrible disease.
I mention all of this because I see, day after day, people who have the disease (albeit in varying severity) who don't take all the possible steps to take care of themselves (Look, I sell wine, there's no such thing as diabetic wine) or don't take it seriously. It breaks my heart every day.
Please encourage your loved ones who may already have the disease or might be at risk to take it very seriously, or if you do, to do so.
