Just as an FYI...

If the house is "in foreclosure" its the responsibility of the bank/mortgage servicer to maintain the property. Beleive me, jailtime is on the list of things execs can be sanctioned with. And, much like this, its rarely used.

Remember, you can get jailtime for a parking ticket. Its just not common.

I didn't really mean to reference the maintenance of the home. I was thinking more along the lines that a foreclosure in the neighborhood will generally drive down values.

Also, forgot to include this in the original post. Where is the line drawn for what MUST be done? There are plenty of homes out there that have lawns that have been mowed, but still look like shit. What about the guy whose house needs to be re-painted? Or the cracked driveway and sidewalk? Or any other number of cosmetic items that will improve his property value and yours?

You didn't treat your dandelions with chemicals? That's 30 days hard time, bitch.

Reminds me of my wife's uncle who refused to bother treating the dandelions in his yard because of his laziness. When his neighbors complained, he told them that the dandelion was his favorite flower and he was pissed that they had all killed the ones in their yards. They didn't have a clue how to respond to him.

We had a neighbor (behind us) that less than seldom cut their lawn... We placed a call to the city, it was considered "Noxious weeds" the city put a notice on their door... they had so many days to cut it (I think it was 3) themselves or the city would cut it and send them the bill...

I think as a home owner you have an obligation to keep your place somewhat presentable. The more this matters to you, the nicer neighborhood you should live in.

I agree but this really isn't a reason to throw someone in jail for. A hefty fine would be good

to whom is this obligation owed? the only other group i recall having any financial investment in my property is the bank and to date they haven't sent me any specs on lawn care. if your saying im obligated to you or any other individual for the upkeep of my home please provide your mailing address as the bill for these services will be on the way shortly. im more than happy to abide by any maintenance requirements you have for my home, so long as your footing the bill.

while i completely agree with you that a person is better served by taking proper care of their home. not to mention the surrounding community. i feel it is dangerous to give the authority to determine what is "somewhat presentable" in regards to your property to another person. if you want the authority to dictate what day your neighbor mows his grass and to what height it is permitted to grow. join a homeowners association and neighborhood nazi to your hearts content. the length of my grass is not the concern of local or state government. and while it can affect my neighbors, if their so convinced a better job can be done. perhaps they would be kind enough to provide a demonstration. every weekend.
