Does this sound fishy?

It wouldn't bounce unless I withdrew a significant sum. You're right though, she'd probably have me killed. I once went to a birthday party for her daughter and most of her family looks as though they just got released from the pen after serving 20-life. I once heard that her 65 year old mother used to work for a drug dealer weighing out and bagging product. However, she does work two jobs so she's not completely criminal, more opportunistic I'd say.

Dude, she's going to kill you. Where do you think she got the 5 large that she needs you to write a check for.

Remember this, the greatest baseball quote of all time:

"The hardest part ab out being a pro ball player is explaining to your wife why she has to take penicillin for your bladder infection." (-Mike Heegan)

That's what we have here, basically.

As long as you remember that, well, that and the obvious ones of never never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body and you're going to be fine.

My concern is of course that you could accomplish all 4 in one day here, if you're not careful.

If she is not a criminal then she should have no problem depositing the cash. Tell her to do that and leave you out of the equation.
The funny thing is she has lots of friends and I asked her if anyone else could do this for her and she said no. I then told her so sorry, can't do it, good luck.

It is legitimate to a certain point. Here's my story.

My wife and I got married about 2 weeks after the sellers of our house accepted our offer. In our FHA loan, they monitor your accounts to make sure you aren't "borrowing" money to "borrow" money (for the house loan/closing costs/down payments).

So of course we had family write us checks as wedding gifts and we had to tell everyone they had to write "gift" on the memo line. The mortgage lender/underwriter then asked us where the money came from once it was in our acct and we had to prove that it was a wedding gift by providing a copy of the check I got from Huntingon online. It's a PAIN.

It is legit, but the way they're going about it, not so much.

What I learned, don't buy a house and get married at the same time because it is a ROYAL pain in the ass.

Yet in this case it's money she already has (in cash for some reason...which is normally shady to start with). She can deposit and then explain where is came from. Yet in this instance it appears she is trying to hide where is came from, which is even more shady.

Exactly my concern. I know her brother in-law, he a good man with a legitimate job, I'm the God father of his daughter. This may well be for helping him obtain a mortgage and I'd like to help him but #1 I'm not going to help him fraudulently, especially if he doesn't qualify because he'll probably end up defaulting anyway and #2 there's no telling how that cash was obtained.

You did the right thing by saying no. If she was really concerned about her brother getting that money, then she can go get a Money Order, or even pay a bank for a cashier's check. Sounds to me like she didn't want her name attached to the so called "gift".

Dub, what is it with you and these women with money problems? Are you a pimp with a conscience or something?

I have a rep for being a soft touch (in other words, a pendejo).

Sorry to be so late to sound in here, DubC.

Nope, nothing fishy, everything sounds legit to me. You're good to go with this plan.

Dude, do you have "Sucker" tattooed on your forehead?

She came to you b/c your Puerto Rican friend told this skank that you're a big pussy who caves in to requests for money.

If you have to get on a message board to ask if something is fishy, that should be your first clue.
