If my LAME encoded files sound fine on my buddies' Bowers & Wilkins 685/6 home theater, I think that's "good enough" for archival quality.

Yea but everything sounds the same on B&W 600 series.

FWIW there is a big difference between "listening" quality (even critical listening) and archival.

I have finally gave up on limewire & frostwire and got with it on the downloading everything from utorrent

"Safer" as in "less probability of getting viruses and trojan horses" or "safer" as in "less likely to have the RIAA and the FBI kick in my door and haul me away for piracy?"

The answer is no to both of them.
