Do you pickup hitchhikers?

I remember one other time a friend and I were driving to Vegas in the middle of the summer and going up 95 right before the California-Nevada boarder, out in the middle of nowhere this young dude was out there, frantically waving as we passed him. I told my that we'd better at least make sure he was alright. We stopped, backed up and let him in. In the back seat my friend had some water in an old Prestone bottle for his radiator. The dude without asking or saying anything started chugging it down. Finally he gasped, wiped his mouth and said, "so, you guys got any dope?". He'd been hitchhiking his way to Reno from Arkansas.

I know someone who picked up a hitcher and was murdered by said hitcher because he refused to give him money. So, no! I don't pick up people I don't know......anywhere!

How would you know the reason they killed them?

(Other than the obvious) maybe it came out in the hitcher's trial and/or the murdered guy lived just long enough to tell someone.

I can remember (back in the late 1950s) my dad would frequently pick up guys in uniform (i.e. servicemen) and give them a ride. Most were just going home on leave and/or back to their unit, etc. Times have changed, you don't even see that happening anymore.
