DL Mike Collins (official thread)

Buckskin86

Head Coach
A much leaner version of Mike Collins was on hand Saturday to lead the first Licking County Family YMCA Big Man Football Camp.

That didn't mean he was any less passionate about teaching high school linemen what he learned while starring at Newark and Ohio State. He also spent time in the NFL with the Lions and Rams.

"Everything like this is for the fancy guys -- the running backs, quarterbacks and receivers," said Collins, who started on Ohio State's defensive line from 1999-2001 and was a captain and All-Big Ten player as a senior. "There's nothing for the big guys.

"I have two sons (ages 7 and 2), and I told my wife that I wanted to start getting more involved with the community, giving back some of my knowledge. This was for the big boys, and I wish I had that when I was here."
Known for his intensity with the Buckeyes, Collins is now a Licking County's Sheriff's Office deputy. He put the linemen through an hour and a half of conditioning drills, then a couple more hours of techniques.

"Pass rushing, run blocking, how to stop the run and defend the pass rush," Collins said. "We're using bags and ladders, things I learned at Ohio State, Detroit and St. Louis. They're sweating hard and working hard, and hopefully it gives them something they can take back to their programs."

Collins: Former OSU coach Jim Tressel catered to stars
Former Newark, OSU player stands behind college alma mater

NEWARK -- Mike Collins doesn't mince words when it comes to his beloved Buckeyes.

The former Newark star, who went on to start for three seasons on Ohio State's defensive line (1999-2001), is dismayed at the recent turn of events at his alma mater.

His senior year, when he was an OSU captain and made second-team All-Big Ten, was former coach Jim Tressel's first, when the Buckeyes won for the first time at Michigan since 1987.

"He didn't practice what he preached," said Collins, who conducted a football camp for linemen last weekend at the Licking County Family YMCA and is a deputy for the Licking County Sheriff''s Office. "He came in and made examples out of guys, in a good way. He had people watching us to make sure we went to class.
