DL Kenny Peterson (official thread)

Canton

PETERSON COULD START

The Denver Broncos are very happy with the progress of defensive tackle Kenny Peterson, also a McKinley and Ohio State standout. Peterson is in line for a starting position on the Broncos' line.

"At the end of the OTA days, Kenny earned a chance to be our starter," Head Coach Mike Shanahan told reporters in Denver last month. "We've got a lot of competition and we evaluate this day by day. He's done a good job."

Broncos report: Peterson feels new Packers QB's pain

Broncos defensive tackle Kenny Peterson, who spent three seasons in Green Bay, says he is confident "Aaron is going to try and do a good job of making his own legacy, as hard as it may be sometimes.?

ENGLEWOOD ? Broncos defensive tackle Kenny Peterson has lived life in the fish bowl that is the NFL's smallest city.

He spent three seasons with the Green Bay Packers after being the team's third-round draft pick in 2003. And that means he also spent three years around the Brett Favre phenomenon and knows exactly what Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is going through in the wake of Favre's messy divorce from the Packers.

"I'm sure the team, the coaches, are trying to do a good job of trying not to let outside distractions reach him," Peterson said Tuesday. "He's a good guy, very bright. But that said, Brett Favre is Green Bay, and you can't get away from that, so I know Aaron is going to try and do a good job of making his own legacy, as hard as it may be sometimes."

Rodgers and the Packers will be in Invesco Field at Mile High on Friday night (7, CBS 4) for a preseason game with the Broncos.

The Packers are 0-2 in the preseason, and most of their training camp has been spent in the swirl of Favre's desire to return to the team after announcing his retirement earlier this year and the team's desire to have Rodgers at quarterback.

In the end, with a battalion of television trucks parked on the team's doorstep, Favre was traded to the New York Jets while Rodgers has gone 18-for-31 passing (58.1 percent) in the preseason for 175 yards to go with a touchdown and an interception. His longest completion has been for 30 yards, and he has been sacked six times in his limited work.

Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, who has spent some time dealing with the legacy of a Hall of Fame quarterback, said he has spoken with Rodgers off and on. Cutler has also played in a golf tournament with Rodgers.

"I wish him the best of luck. I'm excited to see him play," Cutler said. " . . . I can't imagine being in that situation, having a guy like Brett Favre and just what he's done on the field, all of his accomplishments, and have to take over for him.

"He's a good guy . . . we talk every once in a while."

Peterson said in some ways it can be easier for players to move around in Green Bay because fans see them so often, but because of Rodgers' circumstances it might be different for him.

"People do give you your space there," Peterson said. "For the most part, everybody respects your space. Since it is a small city, they've got a better understanding of being in close proximity with the players because they're just going to bump into them more.

"But they definitely know who you are, I mean everybody, especially if you're drafted there."

Sunday Special: McKinley grad Peterson happy with the Broncos
Sunday, September 7, 2008

At every level of football ? high school, college and now the NFL ? Kenny Peterson has needed a year or two to catch up.

Peterson got off to somewhat of a slow start as a young player at McKinley High School. He redshirted at Ohio State, but came on as a sophomore and junior.

Peterson, now in his sixth season in the NFL, is perhaps on the cusp of watching his career take off. The Denver Broncos will use Peterson on third downs and long-yardage situations as a rush defensive tackle.

"I've had a pretty decent camp," Peterson said Saturday during a rare few minutes of free time before Denver left for Oakland, where the Broncos will play the Raiders on Monday. "My whole career hasn't gone as smoothly as I wanted it. I don't want to get too religious, but I put my career in God's hands and let Him control it."

This is an important season for Peterson. He could become a seventh-year player next season, and this is his contract year. A solid season could bring a nice contract.

"Definitely, but every year in the NFL is important for anybody," Peterson said. "In the NFL, nothing is guaranteed. This is a pivotal year, kind of a make or break season.

"One of my defensive coaches told me linemen in the NFL don't really come into their own until the fifth or sixth season, and I'm in that area."

PETERSON STARTS FAST

You may have missed Kenny Peterson's first game of the season since the McKinley and Ohio State star played for the Broncos in the second "Monday Night Football" game against Oakland. Peterson played well for Denver.

He had a sack and a quarterback hurry on Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell. Peterson brought down Russell near the end of the first half on third-and-15 to force a punt.

Ex-Pup helps Broncos

Former McKinley High School and Ohio State star Kenny Peterson is a part of Denver's defensive line rotation.

"Kenny has been up every week on our 45-man roster," Denver coach Mike Shanahan said. "He's played quite a bit.

"We've got, normally, a four-tackle rotation in there. He's in the mix, and he's done a good job for us."

Broncos' Peterson In A 'Not-So-Likely' Business

Every professional athlete does something off the field. They all have hobbies, they all have ambitions. Many of them branch out into other businesses as entrepreneurs. But Denver Broncos' Kenny Peterson is not like most of his peers, he's chosen an industry that nobody would ever expect.

Cosmetics and hair products are Peterson's stock and trade. He owns Havana Beauty Supply in Aurora.

"I figure that no matter what happens during the recession or not, women always want to look good," Peterson said.

But does Peterson really know what women go through to create their look?

"Absolutely not," he said. "I couldn't tell you if a woman had a weave in or not to be honest with you. I'm not that into the industry. I'm more on the numbers side of it and the business side of it."

"That's why I have a very professional and highly-qualified staff."

Peterson hits market.

High school stuff only goes so far in the NFL.

Broncos defensive end Kenny Peterson, a freshman while Broncos coach Josh McDaniels was a senior at McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio, was not signed to a new contract and hit the free-agent market as of 10:01 p.m. MST Thursday.

Peterson, who mostly played with McDaniels' younger brother Ben at Mc- Kinley High, figured to be the Broncos' only free-agent-to-be with a chance of coming back because he can play the specific type of a defensive end the team requires as it converts to the 3-4 defense.

"Kenny is extremely impressed with the Broncos' new coach, and Kenny is very open to returning there," said Joel Segal, Peterson's agent. "There have been discussions."

But Peterson and the Broncos will first explore the free-agent market.

49ers looking at Kenny...

Showing interest in: DE Chris Canty is due for a visit next week. He would be the highest-rated of all the free agents discussed thus far. However, the Giants or Seattle could make him an offer he can't refuse. The team also is looking at Denver free agent DT-DE Kenny Peterson and Cowboys free agent TE Tony Curtis.

DT Peterson re-signs with Broncos
By Lindsay H. Jones
The Denver Post
03/04/2009

The Broncos have agreed to a three-year contract with defensive tackle Kenny Peterson.

Peterson is the first ? and likely the only ? of the Broncos' unrestricted free agents to return to the team for 2009.

"We're real happy," Peterson's agent, Joel Segal, said. "Kenny wanted to be back."

Peterson, at 6-foot-3 and 300 pounds, should be able to fit into the Broncos' new 3-4 defensive scheme.

Peterson played in all 16 games for the Broncos last season and started one. He made 23 solo tackles and three sacks.

Peterson also has a history with new coach Josh McDaniels, dating back to when they both played on the same high school team in Canton, Ohio, though they were separated by several grades. Peterson also played high school football with McDaniels' younger brother, Ben, who recently was hired as an offensive assistant coach for the Broncos.

Peterson gets new deal from old teammate
The Denver Post
Posted: 03/05/2009

Defensive lineman Kenny Peterson has known new Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels since both were teenagers playing high school football on the same team in Canton, Ohio. On Wednesday, Peterson and the Broncos agreed to a three-year contract that will put them on the same team again. Peterson is the first free agent from Denver's 2008 team re-signed by McDaniels.

"If Josh thought I wouldn't contribute to his team, he wouldn't have kept me," Peterson said. "I didn't want to go off the relationship that Josh and I had. When I went in and talked to him, I told him I understand that business is business, and that I want my game tape to be my interview. He saw that, and he felt I could help the team."

Peterson played as a defensive tackle for Denver in 2008. He expects to play as an end in the team's new 3-4 defense.

"Denver is where I wanted to be, that's where my heart was at," Peterson said. "I prayed many nights that this thing would go through in a timely manner."

Fond memory... I watched a number of McKinley's games in 1997.. including the semi-final vs Moeller at the Rubber Bowl... when younger McDaniel was their QB.. the big names were Peterson and Jamar Martin, .. but this DB kept killing people... and the name Mike Doss became an Ohio household name

KP is currently projected as a starter...

Reports out of last weekend?s mini-camp said that the two defensive ends taking the most reps as starters were Kenny Peterson (6?3, 300) and Ryan McBean (6?5, 290). Peterson was a reserve on last year?s Bronco roster

Denver Sports Examiner: Running backs, not defensive linemen, come easy for Broncos

Uncertainty reigns on Broncos' defensive line
By Dan Parr
May 7, 2009
With close to three months remaining before training camp opens, the Broncos are sorting through a fuzzy picture on the front line of their new 3-4 defense. The tentatively penciled-in starters are rookie Robert Ayers at left end, Ronald Fields at nose tackle and Kenny Peterson at right end. Ayers is the only sure starter of the group, although it's possible the Broncos could convert him to rush linebacker in the new scheme. Marcus Thomas, who started every game at defensive tackle in last year?s 4-3 "D," will compete at nose and end, Carlton Powell will battle at nose and Ryan McBean has the potential to earn a starting spot at end. While Ayers, the 18th overall pick this year, is a building block, the rest of this crowd is regarded more as seat warmers for long-term solutions that could come in future free-agent signings and draft choices. Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels and GM Brian Xanders have been criticized for spending only one of their 10 picks on a defensive lineman at last month?s draft, but they?re taking a long-term approach to filling the needs up front. Adding D-linemen could very well be the pair?s highest priority at next year?s draft.

The front three?

In the three minicamp sessions that have been open to the media, the three defensive linemen who have played the most in the Broncos' 3-4 base defense have been Kenny Peterson, Ryan McBean and Ronald Fields.

Broncos fans are familiar with Peterson, who is entering his fourth season in Denver, but may not know much about McBean or Fields. McBean was a fourth-round draft choice of the Steelers in 2007 and spent all of last season on the Broncos' practice squad. Fields started nine games at nose tackle for Mike Nolan's 49ers in 2006. Nolan is now the Broncos' defensive coordinator.

Kenny Peterson
#90 / Defensive End / Denver Broncos

peterson_kenny_mug07_medium.jpg

Height: 6-3

Weight: 300

Born: Nov 21, 1978

College: Ohio State

Exp: 7th Year

How Acq: Signed as Free Agent 2006 (Green Bay)

Contract: 3/4/2009: Signed a three-year contract. Terms not disclosed.
.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Peterson enters his fourth year with the Broncos after spending the first three years of his career in Green Bay (drafted 2003 - 3rd round, 79th overall). Kenny notched 24 tackles and three sacks in 2008, playing in all 16 games including 1 start. However, all three of his sacks came within the first six games of the season, and he did not generate a tackle in 6 of the 16 games he played in.

Scouts, Inc. says Peterson, "is a bit of a tweener because he lacks the explosive quickness off the edge and acceleration around the corner to be an effective pass-rusher. He is not real responsible because he will freelance at times and gives up big running lanes when he should be trying to stack things up at the point of attack. He does do a very good job of using his hands to shed blockers quickly and ends up being engulfed way too often. He is not real quick to read blocking schemes and is not real quick to locate the level of the ball."

A native of Canton, Ohio, Peterson went to the same high school (McKinley) as Coach McDaniels, and was a teammate of Broncos offensive assistant Ben McDaniels, who was McKinley's quarterback. Kenny has been released several times over his career, once by Green Bay and twice by the Broncos. He was suspended for 4 games in 2007 for violating the NFL's policy banning anabolic steroids and related substances.

As the only veteran in this group, Peterson is a virtual lock to make the roster; Denver's decision to give him a new three-year deal certainly matches that thinking. Kenny turns 31 the day before Denver's Week 11 game versus the Chargers.
