DE Jim Marshall
There are few Minnesota sports identities more revered than the Purple People Eaters. Marshall, a Vikings DE for 19 years (1961-79), was an integral part of the group and would be a fitting addition to the group of immortal NFL players in Canton, Ohio. He and fellow linemen Carl Eller, Gary Larsen, Alan Page and Doug Sutherland formed the vaunted group and led the team to a period of dominance that included 10 division titles and 4 appearances in the Super Bowl.

Originally a 4th-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 1960, Marshall held the NFL record for consecutive games played with 282 (270 with the Vikings) until Brett Favre broke the mark. He ranks 2nd in Vikings lore with 127.0 sacks and led or tied for the team lead in sacks in each of the Vikings first 6 seasons. Marshall also ranks 9th in franchise history with 988 career tackles, behind only fellow Purple People Eater Page among DL.

Aside from accumulating sacks and tackles during his career, Marshall also recovered 29 fumbles, a team and NFL record. Marshall started at DE in 4 Super Bowls and was a 2-time Pro Bowler.

Marshall was inducted into the Vikings Ring of Honor on November 28, 1999.

NO. 76 JIM MARSHALL
DE JIM MARSHALL

1957-1958
b. 1937 (Danville, Kentucky)

  • All-American (1958)
  • National champion (1957)
National titles define teams, and All-American honors define individual players. Jim Marshall finished his Buckeye career with both.

Marshall played just two seasons at Ohio State, but he certainly left his mark. One of the team's top defensive ends in history, Marshall helped guide the Buckeyes to the 1957 national championship and was named an All-American the following season.

Marshall's most memorable game came during the 1958 season in a 14-14 tied against Purdue when he scored all 14 of Ohio State's points. He intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown, returned a blocked punt for a touchdown and also kicked both extra points.

After a successful two-year stint with the Buckeyes, Marshall left Ohio State a year early and played in the Canadian Football League before beginning his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns a year later. He was later traded to the Minnesota Vikings where he started for 19 seasons, appearing in four Super Bowls.

Jim Marshall Should be in the Hall of Fame

Jul 28, 2023

Jim Marshall is not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame (HOF). I am incredulous every time I think about it. Jim Marshall not being in the Hall of Fame is like Penn without Teller. Sonny without Cher. Brady without Gronk. It just doesn’t make any sense.

Many of you are not old enough to remember Jim Marshall and the greatness he displayed on the football field. He was a major part of one of the best defensive lines of all time. A leader on the field and in the locker room. And one of the more interesting personalities that has ever graced the earth.

Jim Marshall has a zest for life. He practiced transcendental meditation, which helped him focus mentally on the task at hand. These traits may not help him in his bid to make the HOF, but they certainly made him a fascinating person to be a fan of.

There are early rumors, that once again, Jim Marshall will fall short in his attempt to enter the Hall of Fame. If this is so, the grievous injustice would continue. It’s time to end this injustice and reward him with his rightful place among the all-time greats of pro football. Jim Marshall should be in the Hall of Fame!

Jim Marshall Left Out of Final 12 Being Considered for Hall of Fame Class of 2024

An error of omission in the hearts and minds of Vikings teammates and coaches — and even rivals — is continuing.

Vikings Ring of Honor member Jim Marshall was omitted Thursday as the Pro Football Hall of Fame Seniors Committee narrowed a group of 31 semifinalists to 12 who are being considered for the Class of 2024.

Marshall's 270 consecutive starts in regular-season games with Minnesota is the most by any defensive player in NFL history and ranks second among any player all-time.

To be nominated by the Seniors Committee, a player must have concluded his career before the 1998 season. The group will narrow the 12 remaining candidates to three on Aug. 22, and the 49-member selection committee will vote on the final three.
