DIVX compression discussion thread...

rocketman

flying low
As the name suggests, I'm looking at new codecs to get better quality and lower filesize for my games. Right now I'm using VirtualDub MPEG-2 to convert the recorded TV to divx, but I'm not sure what the most optimized settings are. I'd like to get the file sizes down to 1.5 GB or less, but with improved quality. I'm guessing if I do multiple passes that might help.

If you use Windows Media Center Edition PC's to record games or TV shows, check out DVRMSToolbox. Its semi-script based but its really easy to pick up. It can cut out commercials from your recorded shows and convert the files to wmv or mpeg. Really handy, especially if you have it automated so as soon as a show is recorded it cuts out the commercials - not bad.

I use the old version (1.0.6) of Dr. Divx. The new version sucks because it'll only output in .divx files as opposed to .avi. But anyways, I get great results with it. There isn't much tweaking capability but the results look good and the file sizes are relatively small. I always do a two pass encode, takes a hell of a lot longer but the improvement is noticeable. If you want full reign to use whatever codecs and settings you may want I suggest using DVDx. It's freeware and is what most other programs are based off of.
