Large # of MW D1 programs

College football fans wonder why the MAC has not done well OOConference; a large part of the lack of success has to do with too many teams in a small number of states With OH having 8, MI 5, IN 4 and IL 3; that's 20 of the 116 (not counting the 3 Service Academy programs) in just 4 states. A small number fo states have the overwhelming majority of teams

TX 10
OH 8
FL 7
CA 7 not nearly what they should have with 12% of the US pop.
MI 5
NC 5
LA 5
IN 4
TN 4
AL 4
IL 3
PA 3
MS 3
UT 3
OK 3

74 of 116 in just 15 states!

True, but I imagine that those states also have the highest participation rates in HS athletics...I recall TX, CA, and FL being the top 3, and OH, IL, and PA being right up there

Also, I believe that Wyoming has the highest number of D1A Football programs per capita :)

thakns for sharing, that will come in handy later. This also illustrates an often overlooked detail... that Cali is known for it's quantity of recruits, not quantity (per capita).
