Directed Blood Donation Urgently Needed

OCBuckWife

I am the evil monkey in your closet
One of the best human beings I have ever met has been diagnosed with a terrible disease. He needs a bone marrow transplant and frequent blood transfusions. Giving blood takes an hour out of your life, but your blood could help SAVE HIS. Please, read this article, and GO GIVE BLOOD TO HIM. (The redhead in the thumbnail is Matt, help a "ginger" out.)

His blood type doesn't actually matter in the case of doing a replacement donation. Even if you don't match him exactly, they will take what you give to put into the bank and then take out the equal amount of his blood type to give to him. Paying it forward in one of the best ways possible.

Registering as a Bone marrow donor was something I mentioned a few years ago when my brother was diagnosed with Leukemia. Its a big deal and while the process is extremely painful to receive this donation, its virtually painless to be tested to be a donor.

So since I have been alone now I am doing lots of weird stuff. I finally see Central Park. I teach climbing classes. Etc. etc. Essentially I finally get out. Walking dogs for the ASPCA has been the best. . .

Hence why I haven't been around. I am never at home.

Anyway, this sounds like another worthy experience. I am in NYC so won't be of much help to your friend I bet, but why not. I'll go donate for somebody. They used to not take my blood due to visits in weird countries, but it has been a few years now.

Everyone should do this and post that they did. I have heard stories before about how hard it can be to get donations, and it is so easy for us to do. I'll have to figure out how to do it though.

Edit: well that was quick: I can't donate due to my autoimmune paralysis thing I had recently. Everyone else should though.

Yep, it is really easy to become a member of Be the Match or other similar marrow match registries. It's a cheek swab and a kit they mail you. Easy peasy. Blood is easy peasy too even if you don't direct the donation for blood replacement and it's one of the best things to do, no matter who or why, you do it. Platelet donation is even nicer, as it's done much less often and can be repeated sooner. Outside of my personal plea of the moment, I urge anyone and everyone to give blood and/or platelets often.

Kinch, thank you for taking a moment out of your life, going in, and checking. It was a hard thing for me to decide to put my friend's information out there, to plead to "strangers" for help for a stranger, but to hear about even one person taking the opportunity to try, regardless of "directed donation" makes it worth it. Thank you.

My friend hasn't been sick long. This came on suddenly. He went into the hospital a week and a half ago and only a few days ago was finally diagnosed with a rare, acquired, red blood destructive, disease. Red blood transfusions are only prolonging and stabilizing his condition while a suitable marrow donor is found.

Already on the Marrow Donor List. I'll see what I can do about getting that blood donated.

I think I got tested and put on the list right before I retired from the Air Force in 2001. Is there a way for one to see if they're on the list?

I'm O- and I give a double red every 16 weeks. Also, I'm in the Marrow donor registry already.

The Red Cross has a severe shortage of type O- and of course, summer is always a shortage problem. Hat tip to you for doing it regularly.

Probably best to contact them and see. I just signed up this year, and I'm not very knowledgeable of their workings.

I think Muffler Dragon is right. I know with Be the Match at marrow.org, as a registered donor, I can check up on my own records on their site.

Unfortunately I'm not allowed to donate in the US due to having spent more than 30 days in the UK during the early 90's.

I saw that notice last night when I gave. Being the inquisitive type, I had to ask why. Interesting to find out that in Europe from '80-'96 there was a HUGE issue with Mad Cow. Had no clue about that.
