yep.. this has been gone over in about 4 threads now, ill ding people but rarely, and as ex-wolverine can tesify (he is the most recent) ill always sign good or bad.. or at least leave initials.. otherwise its cheap and meaningless, the negative dings do very little to hurt your rep anyways, i mean look at tibor, im sure he leads the board in negative dings but he is still pretty high.. so i wouldnt worry about it.. if someone doesnt have the balls to sign it, they are probally not very respected themselves anyways so it may not even hurt you, i know ive gotten at least one neg ding that literally took ZERO points from me.. but thats all.. yea.

Just don't ding people.... The closeset I ever gave to dinging someone was sushi... so I gave her positive rep and then gave more of a 'suggestion' in the comment box... But I certainly didn't do any name calling or not leave my name... (Although, I have done some positive rep and forgot to put my initials, because I forget its not a PM )

bkb dinged me once... but he left his name.. and he had negative rep when he did it... so it didn't hurt any. :wink2:

I'm sorry, but I disagree. I think if you only give out positive rep, the reputation points have no meaning at all. Judging by the response here, giving out a ding seems to get your attention moreso than disagreeing within the thread. If you disapprove of a post and then give it positive rep, why even bother?

You guys certainly don't have to give me positive reps if you disapprove of one of my posts. I can take a hit! Hell, Mud called me the biggest idiot on this board, and I didn't even cry! I might have lost a lot of sleep over it, but I'm OK now. :biggrin:

AKAK - I'll be sure to do that (I think I've dinged a grand total of four posts) - but my point was directed towards the posters who only give out positive rep, such as yourself. If reputation points are going to be all of the regular posters patting each other on the back, I fail to see its purpose.

Hey... You'd have to ask someone else about its "purpose"... I didn't build it... as for the 'regular poster' thing... that really doesn't matter. First, after a while you don't get that many rep points... because people have a certain expectation about your posting "level"... second... even if everyone dinged and praised at the same level... the regulars are still going to have more rep than those who don't.. because its not like your rep points are divided by the number of posts you have... or some other ratio.

I do not know if any of you hang out at any other boards with this feature but it is a controversial issue everywhere.

I monitor a few less than reputable places that have this feature and it has caused a riot.

Nothing like a bunch or hackers complaining because they got dinged for a site that is hard to download from. At one place I go they did not give you the ability to disable until just recently. Only the mods had that power and that really set them off. There were as many threads on the User CP as threads on other subjects.

If you are a flamer or attack someone personally I suspect you will get dinged. Most of us prefer to call each other out in the thread when we disagree.

Since louise has left I only give positive reps. Even some of the positive reps I have gotten were not signed.

I would hate to have someone not want to particpate in a thread for fear of getting dinged.

Yeah- You dinged me... I think it was in response to my "Laying out the rules of the Planet" and rule number 1 was "Don't be a Dumbass" which you kind of took offense to... even though it wasn't directed at you (of course, you took it they way I intended...)... That was pretty funny. Ooohh you were pissed... good stuff.
