Got the A560...love it. Thanks for the advice folks.

Where did you wind up buying? Broadway?

Don't forget to pickup some NiMH AA rechargables (the Energizers are really good, it's what I run all my Wii remotes on). Digicams will blow through Alkalines. Using the viewfinder and turning off the LCD will stretch out the battery life quite a bit too.

just bought the panasonic lumix ls70 for the wife to keep in her purse and for her to use around the house so that she doesn't have to mess around with my XTi

it was 149 from bb and it has the image stablization, great camera for her to use.

Bumpity ...

Went out and bought a new camera for myself this weekend. Wound up leaving my local Cord Camera store with the Fuji S8000fd. An absolutely awesome camera. Paid more buying through the brick-and-mortar ($399), but got a $50 mail-in rebate plus free prints + photo CDs for one year, and the peace of mind that I've got a place to return it if I wind up having problems. I probably overpaid by $75 versus if I had ordered it online, but with the rebate and freebies I figure it'll ultimately wind up a push.

Immediate impressions from this weekend though are that this camera is a beast considering it's classified as a point-and-shoot. I went to my niece's basketball game this weekend and spent the entire game taking pictures. The image stabilization and 18x zoom work wonderfully, and I'm now sold on electronic viewfinders over traditional VFs due to the immediacy of seeing focus adjustments with my finger on the shutter button. Amazingly, I toggled back and forth from the EVF to the huge LCD and played around with the browser reviewing my shots between periods ... the camera was on for about 2 hours solid while I took over 80 pics, and I didn't make a dent in the battery life of one group of 4 NiMH 2500mAh Energizer rechargeables. In addition to this I've got another couple of hours on that battery set playing around and shooting pictures of the family, so I'm sold on the battery life alone. Fuji claims up to 500 shots on one fully charged set of 2500-NiMHs, that's a full 2Gb SD card at max 8MP (3,264 x 2,448) resolution.

I think only the most discriminating advanced hobbyists or a pro would find faults with the image quality here. You'll have to be printing poster sizes to begin seeing real flaws. For Joe 6-Pack that doesn't know what ISO noise or chromatic aberration mean, this camera will do pretty much anything they ask. I found it excellent taking blur-free photos, even just using (correctly) the auto-focus modes while tracking with the EVF, at a basketball game, and for run-of-the-mill family portraits the face detection and red eye reduction have all worked without fail over several dozen pictures just from this past weekend playing around and learning what all the camera could do.

Anyone looking for something just below a DSLR, a hybrid, I highly recommend this one!

Check Retailmenot.com for more coupons. I like people to get SLR type cameras like Nikon, Cannon, etc.
But, there are some very nice little cameras out there.
Be sure to back up your photos on a flash drive.

I need a camera that comes with its own "cameras for dummies book"
Considering that I am going to the rockies and will be shooting close, far and very far pictures which of all the cameras do I want? Or something different?
Canon SD1100IS
Nikon Coolpix,
Fuji S8000fd
A560
SD700 IS
Accessories? Lens? back up flashdrives?
Priced maybe 300- 400 max?
Thanks for any help

Just bought Canon SD1100IS within last two weeks... sweet... very compact.. used CNET reviews to help me..
'IS' is a significant factor for us.. we need the stabilizer feature..
Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS (Blue) Digital camera reviews - CNET Reviews

Nikon Coolpix - kinda shied away due to CNET and clarity issues..

Fuji S8000fd - don't know about this one, per se... bought wife a similar model Fuji and she loves it... great pics.. but Fuji's are usually bulkier... not sure if size matters to you (we know it doesn't to your significant other)

SD700 IS - again, shied away due to CNET review in comparison to SD1100IS

Accessories? Lens? back up flash drives? can't help

Priced maybe 300- 400 max? You were doing fine till this one... most of these elitist snobs get DISCOUNTS that exceed $300... so you know these junkies are into the real stuff... Jwins probably doesn't have a lens less than this .. LOL

BTW.. I also bought my wife the Epson PictureMate printer with battery attachment... she can print anywhere.. she uses it at the dog shows... she's a junkie with that toy..

Sd1100is is 200 at fry's electronics (way bigger than best buy, except with great prices on 90% of stuff). Should mean competition is similarly priced, at least online.

Slickdeals.net is a must for bargain hunting. Find some models you like, then search by title in the hot deals forum. Even if the deals are dead, you can get a handle on the pricing and frequency of deals on those models. Plus there is usually plenty of deal discussion to help decide the value of deals.

I'm not up on the new fugi's, but the semi recent ones destroy all in semi low light, with their 2.8 fstop lenses

More after batman

Bump for more info if possible. I've been looking hard at the Canon .
Reviews;
The good: Great image quality; minimal shutter lag; speedy performance; optical image stabilization; face detection; optical viewfinder.
The bad: No manual exposure controls; slow flash recycle time.

BB, beyond what a camera can do, you need to hold one in your hand. Some of these cameras are physically so small, and have such small function buttons that a person with bigger hands will have difficulty using them. Go to a store that has the models your interested in and hold them. Look through them. Get a "feel" for them. That may well effect your choice.
And what ever you buy, always use the supplied strap! You drop one of those cameras and it could ruin it! Get a strap if you have too. But use one.

Portability is another aspect of size. DSLR's destroy the point and shoot models, but the bulk meant I never took it with me to parties or events, let alone stowing it in a bag/car in case one of those random photo opportunities springs forth.

I found the fugi's to be the perfect size. Not too slim to hold, but still sleek enough to fit in pockets and such. Note, these are guy pockets, girly jeans need something sleeker.

What I was touching on earlier about low light is huge. To shoot indoors or in mediocre light, you must have a lens with 2.8 fstop capacity, whether you're shooting professionally or entry-level stuff. Otherwise, you must use a flash, which washes out the scene, usually highlights faces to an extreme (and fault), and generally disrupts whatever scene is taking place. A warm holiday convo at the table turns into 'oh no, I'm on camera, let me hide and/or make awkward faces'

Sometimes the light is too low for even a good 2.8 lens, but often you can snap photos with natural, true lighting and coloring, while others distort their scenes with harsh flashes, or worse, fail to capture the image because their flash is too far to be effective.

One nice feature on some cameras is the foldout screen. This allows you to frame shots in fun ways. You can shoot with the camera way up above your head, or shoot subtly from your lap.

As taos said, the viewfinder is a huge feature. The screen drains your camera in a hurry, so especially when your battery is low, having that option is huge
