Did UT back its way into the NC game?

BuckeyesBaby

Smells the Roses!
The question is valid. Think about it, I know they won all of their games including the big 12 championship game but with that performance or lack thereof, do they deserve the shot when better teams with the same undefeated records mirror UT's.

I watched possibly the best and most exciting game of the day at noon happen not in the SEC or Big 12 but in the Big East! Cincy and Pitt went up and down the field. Granted that doesn't say much for the defense of UC. Cincy had to stage a 21+ pt comeback late in the game and finally win this barn burner 45-44 that was an instant classic.

Later on that same night in Dallas TX, what could be really considered a home game for the Longhorns they were mauled from beginning to end on both sides of the ball. All UT had to do was win, and they were in. They were sloppy from start to finish against an unranked Nebraska team! Suh was double and triple teamed all night and still almost singlehandedly destroyed UT's backfield. He was back there so much he took up residency and started paying taxes. On a side note I have never seen someone dominate the inside interior linemen such as Suh, nor have I ever seen Colt get manhandled the way he did when Suh got to him.

UT had to stage a comeback late in the 4th down 2 pts. They started with great filed position thanks to a huge mental mistake by kicking the ball out of bounds on the ensuing kickoff. That handed UT the ball at its own 40 yd line!
The next play Colt threw to Shipley on a crossing route which gained 22 yds but Nebraska gave them another gift this time of 15 extra yards on a horse-collar tackle! What happened next nearly blew the entire season for UT by 1 second all over again! Was anyone else feeling they have seen this movie before or was it just me? With 17 seconds to go in the 4th QTR McCoy casually walked up to the line and decided to roll right out of the pocket he then threw it out of bounds to stop the clock. Nebraska thinking they had won and stormed the field for a massive upset and to send it into BCS chaos!
The review was ordered up and the Nebraska players, coaches and fans were ordered off the field. UT hoped, prayed and longed for miracle kick outside of Hunter's range for a 46 yarder that was no gimme. As we all know he snuck it inside the left upright to win the game 13-12 and to a huge sigh of relief to the Lone star state.

UT had gifts of illegal procedure starting at the 40 yd line and another gift of 15 added on by the horse-collar tackle.

UT also had 1 remaining timeout when the 17 seconds decided to creep up on them which they inexplicably and almost came thisclose to costing them their dream season that they decided not to use at that instant!

Cincy, BSU, and TCU also finished with perfect records and Cincy played an outstanding game to the Pitt Panthers who were by the way ranked in the top 20 and not an unranked Nebraska team.

Bottom line, is it just me or do others feel the sentiments as myself and think the BSU was royally screwed over and should be playing for the national title this year? Curious to hear what everyone thinks.
:oh:

No, they won by beating a ranked opponent in the championship game. If Cincy had made it would they have "backed in" by winning a no-defense shootout over Pitt? Again, I'd still say no.

At the risk of outrageous slings and arrows being sent my way, Ohio State in 2007 was the definition of "backing in" after getting Zooked by everyone else in front of us losing.

Look, you could make an argument for Cincinnati or TCU playing in the NCG. I could see valid points for and against. BSU played an incredibly soft schedule, and play in the WAC. They have 1 quality win and a couple of OK wins. They are still building a program & could possibly wind up in the Pac-10 (Idaho is a former member) or even in a strengthened MWC that would be an automatic qualifying conference in a few years. That said, they wouldn't even win an argument with Cincy or TCU at this point, and they certainly don't have a claim over Texas. Bottom line is Texas won all their games, so I can't say that they backed their way in. Maybe they edged out other teams, but they shouldn't be penalized for winning, as long as the majority still thinks they are a more solid team than Cincy or TCU.

Without the kickoff out-of-bounds and the horsecollar, Texas would have run a normal 2-minute drill. The penalties put them in FG range after one good offensive play, and after that they took few chances. It they had started at their own 20 or 25, and not had a horsecollar, who knows what would have happened? But Texas would have been calling different plays, with almost a minute and a timeout to move the 35 yards they got on penalties.

First of all, no. They by no means backed in.

That said, this has been a very strange year for CFB. Of the six BCS conferences only two (Big Ten and SEC) have more than one team with less than three losses.

As a result most BCS teams have unimpressive resumes. Of the five remaining undefeated teams only two can claim a victory over a team currently ranked in the top 10 - Alabama and Boise St.

Interestingly, only one team in the entire nation can claim two wins against teams currently ranked in the top 10 in one or both of the two major polls.

That team is The Ohio State University.

Nebraska played a phenomenal game on defense. 95% of the teams in D1A wouldn't have scored a single touchdown on that team on that night, Cincy included. Dogging Texas for barely scraping by is ridiculous. Give the Huskers their due; they came to play and made Texas earn it.

The Fix was in. It was a gimme by the Big 12. And the refs and replay officials were front and center. What is one of the first things they teach referees?
Don't let your call decide a game at the end.

Did you go to referee school? I doubt this is taught to any referee. I just think it's a way certain fans feel.

The definition of "backing into a championship" or bowl game is scUM's 2004 Rose bowl appearance. We bent that ass over and had our way with it, and after we were done, they were fortunate enough to have Wisky I think it was lose their game that afternoon. To back in you need to lose your last game, then depend on someone else to lose as well so you can get in. Lucky for us, Dick Rod isnt half the coach that Llloyd was, so the only thing he will be backing into is a male prostitute.

They teach WHAT? Exactly how much time should be left when the refs walk off the field and quit doing their job?

If a player is holding on the last play of the game and you don't call the hold - THAT is deciding the game.

If a second remains on the clock and you don't put that second on the clock - THAT is deciding the game.

My only question about the review of time left on the clock was that I thought time was "officially" kept on the field or by some designated official, and not by the clock that the stadium might see. If that is so, they weren't reviewing the "official time" and as a consequence, I'm not sure how it was reviewable at all.

But, I could be wrong on how official time is kept.
