Detroit Red Wings (Official Thread)

as expected Dallas Drake retired yesterday but the signing of Hossa still has every Red Wing fan just as excited for this upcoming season as this past one.

I'm curious as to when or if Zetterberg gets his contract extension. He's probably the 3rd most important player on the team behind Lidstrom and Datsyuk and it would be a shame not to give the guy a much deserved pay increase. There's no way his salary should be less than Kronwall, Cleary and now Brad Stuart.
hes due what 2.9m? i think he takes a resonable check (below his true value to stay)

datsyuk is signed out at 6.7m through 13/14?
rafalski at 6m through 11/12
stuart/kronwall at 3.75m through 11/12

Hossa to skate with Datsyuk and Holmstrom

When you're hunting elephants, lions and leopards, where you're going to skate Marian Hossa probably isn't your top priority. I'm guessing staying alive takes precedence. But Detroit coach Mike Babcock is back from a hunting trip to Tanzania and he must have thought about Hossa somewhere along the way because he told me today he has a good idea how the lines will shake out in Detroit.

"I'll start Hossa with [Pavel] Datsyuk and [Tomas] Holmstrom and [Johan] Franzen, [Henrik] Zetterberg and [Jiri] Hudler will start together," Babcock said. "Then you go [Dan] Cleary, [Valtteri] Filppula and [Mikael] Samuelsson. That's as good as any third line in hockey."

Yeah, I'd say.

Holmstrom, Datsyuk and Hossa? I think Hossa will do alright with those two. Here's a debate: If you're Hossa, who would you rather skate on a line with? Datsyuk and Holmstrom or Sidney Crosby and Pascal Dupuis? Wow, that's a tough one.

And yes, Babcock was hunting lions. That's crazy. He said the best part was that his cell phone didn't ring for 12 days. That's fine, but I'd still rather not get eaten while on vacation.

"We were in the middle of nowhere, they drop you off. It's dangerous as hell," Babcock said. "We were hunting huge dangerous game. I grew up hunting and fishing and I love doing it."

Look at the power play lines.....

Zetterburg - Datsyuk - Hossa/Holmstrom with Lidstrom and Rafalski

Franzen - Fillippula - Holmstrom/Hossa with Samuelsson/Kronwall/Stuart

Either one will probably be able to score and that top PP line will dominate.

This may be the last truly great team in the NHL. I don't think many guys are going to take the pay cuts that Hossa and Stuart did to be a part of a team like this very often.....

Wings forward Franzen out 3-4 weeks after injuring medial collateral ligament

DETROIT -- Red Wings forward Johan Franzen will be out for three to four weeks because of a sprained left knee, the team said Sunday.

The Detroit left winger damaged the medial collateral ligament during the second period of Saturday night's 6-5 shootout win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Franzen was injured during a collision with Blackhawks defenseman Brent Sopel in the neutral zone.

the rumor is Franzen is already walking on the knee and that the initial injury isn't quite as bad.

Meanwhile, Hossa is heating up, Lidstrom is still Lidstrom and Datsyuk and Zetterburg are still 2 of the best forwards in the league. Now if only the goaltending would come around....

Do you really need goaltending with that team? Loaded !!!

Hope the Mule gets well soon.

For the regular season, probably not.

But for the playoffs someone will need to step up.

It's going to be a quiet trade deadline for Detroit too, they are right up against the cap.....

you will shut it about my penguins... lol once again it looks just like last years game

Pretty much it is.....although I will say the Pens have attacked every error by the Wings (even on the gift 5 on 3), but the Wings have pretty much gotten what they've wanted on offense tonight.
