Denver might already be better for this trade.
A better open floor PG was acquired in Raymond Felton. George Karl would never say it, but he'd much rather have Ty Lawson and Ray running the show.
On top of that, as good of an isolated scorer as Carmelo is, he just isn't an elite championship level player. His style isn't conducive to the running tempo Karl likes, or D'Antoni likes for that matter. But unlike the Cavs had, Denver actually has a ridiculously good scorer and athlete in J.R. Smith waiting in the wings behind Melo. And Smith is actually great in the open floor and isn't an iso player.
I don't think Denver loses at all in this trade. The talent they got back, with the new Knicks infused onto the roster makes Denver as good as they were IMO.
Lawson, Felton
Smith, Afflalo
Chandler, Gallinari
Martin, Harrington
Nene, Birdman
is actually as good as if not better than:
Billups, Lawson
Afflalo, Billups
Melo, Smith
Martin, Harrington
Nene, Birdman
JR Smith now being able to start clears the path for him. He was staggered with Melo b/c there wasn't enough ball to go around. Afflao probably comes off the bench with Gallinari which instantly adds depth the Nuggets didn't have.
I don't know..maybe I'm taking crazy pills. I don't see a drop off post all-star break at all for Denver. Probably a similar record to what they went into the break with.....
BTW Chauncey Billups was a class act and a fan favorite so I'd never expect their GM to kick his ass on the way out. But ask George Karl and now Mike D'Antoni what they think about Chauncey running an open court offense for them. There's a reason everyone remembers Big Shot in Detroit. Half-court, grind it out team. Karl is probably slobbering at the thought of having Felton and Lawson pushing the ball. There's no drop off in talent between Lawson and Felton, and Lawson was already ripping minutes away from Billups. The Nuggets were also using Chauncey a lot at the 2 when Lawson came in because they really didn't have any depth there. Now they've got plenty of depth across the board.
Yep, you nailed it. Karl indicated that now he can finally go to an up tempo game which is not possible with Melo (and Mr. Big Shot as well). Besides, even if Melo scores 40, how much does he give up on the other end? How many offensive rebounds/putbacks occur when Melo is on the court? Denver has historically done best when they take advantage of the altitude factor at home and wear out the visiting tem. See Moe, Doug. Nuggets scored the last 16 points in the game last night. That game was a loss with Melo on the team, in my IMO.billmac91;1879352; said:I'll go ahead and toot my own horn...from the Knicks thread the night they traded for Carmelo.
That is great! I love to watch coach Karl's facial expressions on the bench, especially when JR Smith does something stupid (which is a regular occurrance). Last night he gave a bunch of those looks when the Nuggets and ex-Knicks players were not on the same page.y0yoyoin;1879506; said:i feel really happy for coach karl...as i posted in the cavs thread a month ago, i got to meet coach karl and actually got to go out to dinner and spend time with him...couldn't be a nicer guy and a more down to earth person...i even pitched aaron craft to him as a point guard for him to draft in a few years...he laughed (he loved billups but he really loves his alma matter duo he has now)
