I think Dryden has brought up the guys who are definitely on the hot seat entering the season. There is a progression to getting fired. First, it's the position coaches, then the coordinators, and, when there is no more blame to be passed on, the head man. The above names have all let well known assistants go recently. The above names all deal with rabid fan bases who are used to winning. The schools that the above names coach for, all have the financial ability to reach settlements and still hire a quality new guy. The key to the above keeping their jobs will be winning the marquee games. I don't think the fan bases of those schools will tolerate losses to certain opponents. And to keep our Texas guests happy, I'd throw Franchione onto the hot seat as well. The Aggies have a lot of money, or at least they used to, they don't like to lose, and patience is wearing thin. Makes for a very interesting upcoming football season.

Carr being a 2.5 isn't anywhere as egregious as John L. Smith being a 2.5. Realistically, Carr isn't going anywhere until after the 2007 season, when Hart and Henne leave. I expect he'll officially retire then, whether quietly forced out or not.
Now, I expect JLS to be gone if MSU doesn't make a bowl game this year. Whereas Carr is almost on the bubble, JLS is solidly there. He's a 3.5 and if not for solid athletic department support, a 4.

I almost completely agree. However, I don't think two 9-3 seasons with OSU losses would get Carr fired, assuming a decent record against Notre Dame, MSU, and bowls.

I agree. I think LLLLLoyd needs more than one more season to get canned, and I think John L. Smith could be gone by December.

Ordinarily, you may be right. But a 9-3 record (now going to a 12-game regular season) implies two losses to team other than Ohio State, with at least one of them most likely being against ND or MSU. Also, the two losses to Ohio State won't be just two losses to their hated rival...they will be the fifth-in-six and sixth-in-seven game losses respectively. I don't think Ohio State has ever won five games out of six, let alone six out of seven against Michigan. That would have to be totally unacceptable to Michigan fans and the administration.
EDIT: We did win six of seven (1957-1963) and five of six (1960-1965) under Woody Hayes.

Nice to George O'Leary considered "untouchable" at UCF. I'll be rooting for them big this year.
I think he takes into account the program's status, as well as performance. In terms of expectations, Meyer is on a much hotter seat than Schnellenberger. Florida Atlantic's fans will not be ready to lynch Schnellenberger for a 6-5 season. Not so for the Gators. I can't really argue w/ any of his assesments, although Michigan St. is a volatile situation. At Clemson and Nebraska, Bowden and Callahan have enough momentum/potential from last year that the fans are looking forward, rather than sharpening their knives. A bad year at either school this year, and both of those guys are looking at being 4's next year. Fulmer will be a 5 next year if he has a repeat performance from last year-which I am fervently praying for-I hate Tennessee almost as much as ND and scUM.There has been a lot of house cleaning in the past couple years at big time programs-Florida, UCLA, ND, Washington, Colorado, Arizona-the alumni have to give these guys 3 or 4 years before going nuts.

Nothig 'big-time' there - that's a middle-of-the-road BCS program trying to get out of a bad period.
But I'd love for them to develop into a threat to win the PAC-10 every year.

Carr will never get fired even if michigan goes 0-12. Why? Because he's already stated what he's gonna do in private a long time ago when he signed his current deal.

1998. They lost to Miami the last game of the year, or probably would have been in the first BCS Championship game. But they've won 5 Rose bowls and a national championship, so they can make the claim.

They've played in two BCS-level bowls in 20 years (Rose Bowl, in '94 and '99, losing both). Their sole national title was 1954 (shared with us). Last year was the first time they finished ranked in either poll in seven seasons (AP 16th, Coaches 13th), and have finished ranked in the top five once in 23 seasons. I'm not sure that I'd classify them as a "big-time" football program...

They had some good years while Vermeil was there, when they sure stuck it to us in the Rose Bowl in 1975
. Donahue also had some good years, and they had a monster stretch in the 80's that included 3 Rose Bowls in 4 years (82, 83, 85...all wins) and a Cotton Bowl win and a Fiesta Bowl win too. They won 8 straight Bowls in the 80's.All that said though, they have only won 10 games 7 times in the 60 years since WWII (including last year), and only 10...never more than 10. Also in that time period they've only had 1 undefeated season (1954) and 5 one-loss seasons. Since 1954 when they shared that title, they've never been ranked higher than 4th, and have finished the season in the Top Five 6 total times...4th once, 5th 5 times. Their Bowl record since 1990 has been 4-6...not as bad as ND :tongue2: , but still bad.
Bottom line, they definitely have some tradition to be proud of...but UCLA is a basketball school, and they are not an elite football school.

I guess it's semantics. They're not elite, but they're a program with a good tradition. Somewhere in the same ballpark as Colorado, Washington, and Michigan State.
In that 'Rating teams based on all-time poll rankings' thread that I update each year, they surprisingly show up in the top 15. That factors in all seasons since 1936.
