If you are looking for former Ohio State players how about Pepper Johnson? He was up for the defensive coordinator in the pros but didn't get a chance. While he might only be here for 2-3 years, it would be nice to show off those Super Bowl rings.

When J/T was hired he brought Bob Tucker from Y-town along with him and made Bob Tucker the "Director of Football Operations" at Ohio State. This was J/T's last defensive co-ordinator at YSU when they won thier last Div1-AA in 1997. Bob Tucker has been around OSU football since 1979. He is also near retirement... Jim puts alot of trust in him and he will look to Tucker for help in bringing in the New D/C0-ordinator.

Alot of people say that the defense we run was formed around what Ron Stoops taught at Cardinal Mooney in Y-town. I know its a little old but his son Bob Stoops learned it well and took it with him to Iowa. Bo Pelini played for Ron Stoops at Cardinal Mooney also. Bob Davies played at YSU but before Tressels time. So whoever is selected as the D/Co-ordinator for Ohio State, will be coming into a system that hasn't and will not change for quite awhile. I always thought that Pugac had the best defensive system i had seen in quite a few years at Ohio State, but I think what we are seeing now is a pretty good one. Lets hope it continues its winning ways.

Since most of the "good" candidates are only expected to be around a few years (Pelini, Davie, Heacock) - couldn't they help groom Fickell for the job? Then he can just slide in 2-3 years from now when they are looking for a new DC.

Fickell knew Pagac's system quite well but when he came to Ohio State there was some major adjustments to be made under the way Mark Dantonio had it headed. I think Fickell may need alittle more time before he is ready.

It amazes me that after one of the greatest careers in Buckeye history and a long tenure in the NFL, this quote never seems to be far from Spielman.

Some people just know the game inside and out, and Spielman is one of the gifted few. We would be very lucky to get him to coach our defense. His passion alone would make us better as a team. And he has had no lack of experience learning and evaluating defensive schemes.

IMO, there is no one out there anywhere with the kind of relevant experience that Spielman has to do this job.

If that's enough, how come nobody lists passion on their resume, but everyone lists their experience?

The reason somebody like me always has this knee-jerk reaction about Spielman being a coach is because somebody always has a knee-jerk reaction nominating him for a position he is not yet qualified for.

Tenacity doesn't make you a good coach. Good ball instincts don't make you a good coach. A legendary playing career doesn't make you a good coach. A popular radio show doesn't make you a good coach. Ohio State is prestigious enough that they can DEMAND that their upper-level coaches prove themselves elsewhere before taking control at Ohio State. Also, the stakes are too high for Ohio State year after year to take a shot with coaches who have not proven their COACHING ability yet.

None of us are saying that Spielman would be a BAD coach, just that we don't know if he's GOOD, and the Buckeyes don't have to and can't afford to hire anyone that they're not already sure is good.
