It appears that if you want a great D in terms of ranking you need a plodding low voltage offense. And you aren’t winning crap with that.
IMO - there is something to be said about being able to run the ball and chew up clock.
Somewhere along the lines, CFB coaches traded ToP as an important metric for Explosive Play percentage.
I'm not asking for 3 yards and a cloud of dust, but it's rare for a team with a 10-point lead to field a punt in the 2nd half and pick up 3-4 first downs and chew up 4:30-5:30 of gametime. I don't think you have to sacrifice modern offensive principles to do this, you just have to be comfortable with a QB watching the play clock tick down as much as possible and getting 3-4 yards of offense per play.
