Why would you put 8 men in the box against a team that can't run? We haven't been a good running team for two years!

I would beg for 8 in the box right now! Holmes, Gonzales and Ginn in one on one situations???? Fuggid abowdit!!
Teams do play us with 8 in the box, and the reason is that they don't believe our QB's can get the ball to our receivers, especially with a heavy rush. Our passing attack is not that strong, even though we always have good receivers. I'm really hoping our QB's can be a little more effective this year. It's also why I would like to see TS get another shot. His passes were tighter and more accurate, and he was able to buy time with his legs.

This season could be a lot of fun if we can consistently connect with our receivers. Because, damn, they're special!

Point being, the last two seasons not counting a few glaring exceptions, our running game was not strong enough to make a team put 8 men in the box....they could stop us with 6 or 7. If we get the running game on track early and often this season we could really be looking at a record setting year. I believe our defense will hold opponents to 16 points or better for the season average and our offense is more than capable of doubling that total. The biggest change is going to be when we get inside the opponents 40 yard line and what our play calling looks like. Without Mr. Automatic to come in and get 3 easy we will be leaning on our RB's a lot more to open up passing lanes for Ginn and Holmes in the shorter field.

Teams double covering, triple covering, or spying on Ginn will be easily beaten by Holmes and Gonzales. Our offense just has too many weapons for an opposing team to gameplan for one player.

I know this is an early post in this thread... and I apprecitate everything someone has said up to now... but until an RB is included as a weapon... we won't have a VERY good offense... by that I mean one to really fear.

I am pretty sure scUM has fear of our offense after what we did to them without a rb.

"If they put 8 in the box then you run a PA pass 15+ yards down the middle of the field..."

The problem, and a huge weakness for OSU the last few years, is we haven't had a play action that could hold anyone. It's a reason teams have done such a great job against our run IMO. They don't have to worry any run is a play action because we execute it so poorly. It improved last year, but we still have a long way to go in that area IMO.

I'm not sure why, but I just don't have the same level of optimism for Haw yet. It's probably just that I don't want to set myself up for disappointment. I remember reading threads about how fast and strong Lydell was getting, and we all know how that turned out. I'm really frustrated that Pittman seems to have lost his edge, because his ability to hit a hole at top speed and gain the yards after contact really impressed me. His fumbles are a different story, but I had hopes that he'd fix that problem.

I think that if one of our QB's has a strong year (my money is still with Smith), we'll tear up opposing secondaries. I just doubt the QBs' consistency and JT's play calling. Once we put together a few games of 40+ pass plays and 300+ yards passing, I'll buy it. Until then, Tressel-ball is Tressel-ball in my mind. My crystal ball says it's another year of grind'em out offense with suffocating defense. Throw in a good punter and place kicker, and the Bucks will be just fine.

By the way, anybody follow the Penguins while JT was there? Was Tressel-ball always Tressel-ball, if you know what I mean? Did he ever drastically change his approach based on his personnel? I remember reading that his philosophy has always centered on kicking and defense, but I may be wrong.

Couldn't agree more! Winning is what counts.

I think the Shot-Ginn was more out of necessity than desire last year. If our line is improving and Haw is as great as advertised, I think we can forget about the Shot-Ginn as the standard offense.

You can't dismiss Pittman simply because of some fumbles. Remember Eddie George? How many fumbles did he have against Illinois his freshman year? At least two, maybe three.

On the other hand, Pittman is no Eddie (yet). If Haw is as good as I hear, start him. Duh. But I think I agree - I expect many low-scoring games this year. I'm really going to miss Nuge.

Personally I am expecting improvement this year. Not hoping for improvement, but expecting it.

Pittman may have had a case of fumbilitis -- but that can be cured.

We do have Haw -- who I believe will definitely see more playing time this next year than Pittman, not at first perhaps -- most likely as the year progresses.

We also have the possibility of Maurice Wells playing an early role.

On the QB side we have a 3-headed monster in the best possible way.

A Zwick likely with renewed desire needing to hold onto the good he did himself with a gutsy performance in the Alamo Bowl.

B Smith -- wanting so badly to get onto the field of play and redeem himself.

C The "X" factor of ToddBoeckman -- who I really want to see take some reps in the Spring Game

Nothing wrong there so far.

As for the rest of the crew on the O-line, many returning players makes (surely) for a more solid and experienced line. That alone should help in setting up the run, which helps support the pass (PA) or allows the pass to set up the run.

And in the passing game --Gonzo et al are going to be too much for anyone to lock-down. I'll be looking to see how they deploy Hall in The Spring Game, is he going TE or will they try and use him over the middle?

Last but certainly not least the "XXX" factor that is Ted Ginn.

Too good by far --

Put him in as a receiver it amplifies our passing game.

Let him run a reverse or an end-around... who really can stop his speed?

Use him simply as a "decoy" with a sleeper receiver taking up the freed up space given up by a spying safety or linebacker.

In sum -- Ginn will do a great deal to free up our entire offense.

Its up to the coordinators to spot which Defensive tendency the opponent is adopting to stop Ginn and work against that grain to our advantage.

I'm not dismissing Pittman because of fumbles. I'm not dismissing him at all. My comment was nothing more than reiterating my impression of the reports that he has lost his drive and motivation. As a result, he supposedly out-of-shape and not working out in the weight room like Haw is this winter.

The thing I like about Haw is the attitude and teamwork he showed on the sidelines. Most visibly in the alamo bowl, he was going around the sidelines getting guys pumped up, or going around the huddle on the sidelines (before the squad runs onto the field) and slapping guys on the butt/back. He seems like a good team player. Obviously one can only deduce so much from this, but it fits with the motivation we've seen out of Haw contrasted with the lackluster arrival of pittman (who apparently didn't want the keys to the buckeye RB position, the easiest opportunity anyone has ever had during a good year).

I'm honestly worried about this too. I remember the 2nd Fiesta Bowl. OSU's offense came out with a totally different look than we saw all year, and we absolutely toasted KSU's defense. What happened? The next year JT went back to his same old self with the same old pathetic offense. This year we saw a different looking offense the last two games. Will JT stick with it this time, or is it back to our old ways?

I understand being cautious about Haw, right now he's all hype and very few people have actually seen him. I'm hoping for big things, and I think he can. Unlike Lydell, Haw has actually shown some speed. People only claimed Lydell had it. Anyone remember Haw's two long TDs (one called back) in the Big 33? He ran a 4.21 and 4.28 at the OSU camp. It was a fast track, but still impressive and over a tenth of a second better than anyone else there. He ran a 4.4 at scUM and a 4.34 at PSU. He'll be easily the fastest RB in the last 5 years. I love the fact he played fullback in HS his junior year (shows toughness and willingness to block) and that he played for an inside running team. For all the excitement about Maurice Wells he ran inside very rarely, and at OSU you have to excell at that to play. He's the guy I want to see most during spring practice. His maturation could be huge for this offense if Pittman can't get his head out of his.............
