Deaths Of Notable Sports Figures (R.I.P.)

Forgot about Walt Frazier and Pearl Monroe. Good save. Probably some other notable guard tandems that have forgotten. Celtics had Danny Ainge and ?. DJ?

Dennis Johnson was his name.

Arguably one of the ugliest human beings of all time and a HOF player. RIP.

It wasn't really the other guard pairing that made that unit great, it was DJ being the distributor to one of the greatest front courts of all time (if not The greatest).

Bill Oliver, a program legend at Alabama who was a part of five national championships with the Crimson Tide as a player and assistant coach, has died at age 85, according to multiple reports. Though Oliver was known primarily for his time with the Tide and coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, he coached on both sides of the Iron Bowl rivalry during 33 years in college football.

Oliver was best known as the defensive coordinator on Alabama's 1992 national championship team that shut down Miami's high-powered offense in the Sugar Bowl. The Hurricanes, led by Heisman winner Gino Terretta, were playing for back-to-back undefeated national championship seasons. Oliver organized a defense that led to a 34-13 decimation and held the Hurricanes without an offensive touchdown.

Oliver was also a defensive back on the 1961 title team and defensive backs coach under Bryant on teams that won titles in 1973, 1978 and 1979. He was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.

Former Ohio State basketball captain and Ohio Basketball Hall of Famer Gene Millard died Tuesday at 90 years old.

Millard played at Ohio State from 1954 through 1957, scoring 12.2 points per game as team captain in the 1956-57 season. He scored the first basket in St. John Arena history at the start of that year in November 1956.

Millard's playing career led into a coaching career, beginning as a Buckeye assistant to coach Fred Taylor in 1957-58. He coached four seasons at Washington Court House High School from 1958-62, then another 29 seasons while also serving as athletic director for Bexley from 1962-87 and 1992-96.

The four seniors – Jim Morgan, Gene Millard, Vern Woods, and Dale Fairchild – brought exciting basketball to Stivers over a three year period. During that time, Stivers won two Dayton City Championships and two District Championships. The four seniors were selected to the 1953 Journal Herald 1st Team All-City. In addition, Jim Morgan, Vern Woods, and Dale Fairchild were named to the 1953 All Ohio team.

It should be noted that these four seniors were recruited by many Division 1 colleges: Jim Morgan earned All-American honors at Louisville. Vern Woods had an outstanding college career at Pikeville Kentucky College. Gene Millard captained the Ohio State Buckeyes under Coach Floyd Stahl, a former Stivers coach.
