Former Ohio State Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach Mark Mitchell Dies at 56 Years Old
Former Ohio State women’s basketball assistant coach Mark Mitchell, who worked for the Buckeyes from 2013-18, died Tuesday at 56 years old.

The Ohio State women’s basketball community suffered a tragic loss on Tuesday.
Mark Mitchell, an assistant coach for the Buckeyes from 2013-18, died Tuesday at 56 years old. A cause of death had not been reported as of Tuesday night.
Mitchell, the father of Ohio State’s all-time leading scorer Kelsey Mitchell, was with the Buckeyes for each of Kevin McGuff’s first five seasons as head coach. The Buckeyes won two Big Ten regular-season championships and a Big Ten Tournament title and made four NCAA Tournaments during Mitchell’s time on staff.
“As a program, we are devastated to hear of the passing of former assistant coach Mark Mitchell,” McGuff said in a statement to WCPO9. “Mark was extremely dedicated to his family, friends and players. His passion for young people allowed him to positively shape the lives of so many who had the privilege of playing for him. We mourn with Cheryl, Kelsey, Chelsea, Kevin, Cam and the extended family. Mark will always remain in our thoughts and prayers.”

Former NFL cornerback Vontae Davis was found dead Monday at a residence in South Florida, Davie police confirmed. He was 35."This morning, Davie Police Officers responded to 6051 SW 178th Avenue in reference to a medical call. Officers were called to the residence by the house assistant, who found the homeowner deceased. We can confirm that the deceased individual is Vontae Davis age 35. Preliminary information suggests that foul play is not involved," Davie police said in a statement.
Police said the investigation remains active.
Davis made headlines in 2018 when, while playing for the Buffalo Bills, he abruptly retired at halftime of a September game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Pat Zachry, a talented and well-liked right-hander who made an All-Star Game, won a Rookie of the Year Award and a World Series, and was once traded for Tom Seaver over the course of 10 big-league seasons, died this week following a lengthy illness, according to longtime New York Mets public relations guru Jay Horwitz. He was 71 years old.Hall of Famer and former battery mate Johnny Bench tweeted the following message about Zachry:
Zachry made an impact at the onset of his career, debuting in 1976 and subsequently posting a 128 ERA+ and a 1.72 strikeout-to-walk ratio. His performance was deemed good enough to earn him a share of the National League's Rookie of the Year Award alongside San Diego Padres' reliever Butch Metzger. Zachry then helped the Reds secure a World Series victory by delivering a quality start in Game 3 against the New York Yankees.
Alas, Zachry wasn't long for the Reds. He would begin the 1977 season off in a slow manner following an offseason operation to correct a hernia, according to his SABR biography. The Reds then traded Zachry that June as part of a four-player package sent to the Mets in exchange for Tom Seaver. Zachry would have his moments with the Mets, making the 1978 All-Star Game among them, but too often found himself injured or otherwise unable to stack up in a favorable manner when compared to Seaver. (To be fair, that's true of most all pitchers.)

Sloan made an impact on college football as both a player and longtime coach
Former Alabama quarterback and longtime college football coach Steve Sloan has died. Sloan, who won two national championships while playing under legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, was 79.
Sloan began his Alabama career as a backup to Joe Namath, though he earned some playing time in 1964 as Namath dealt with a nagging knee injury. The Crimson Tide won the SEC title and were named consensus national champions while logging a 10-1 record. Sloan returned as the starter in 1965 and led Alabama to a second straight SEC title and national championship.
After a short stint in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons, Sloan embarked on his coaching career as an assistant with Alabama in 1968. In 1971, he earned his first full-time opportunity as the offensive coordinator at Florida State and spent one season with the Seminoles before moving on to the same position at Georgia Tech.
Sloan was hired as Vanderbilt's head coach in 1973 and amassed a 12-9-2 record, including an appearance in the 1974 Peach Bowl, in two seasons with the Commodores. He left for Texas Tech in 1975 and in 1976 led the Red Raiders to a Southwest Conference title and a ranking of No. 13 in that year's final AP poll.
He was hired by Ole Miss in 1978, spending five years with the Rebels and compiling a 20-34-1 record. His best season with the program came in 1978 when Ole Miss went 5-6. Sloan closed out his career with a four-year head coaching stint at Duke from 1983-86. From 1987-2006, Sloan served as athletic director at Alabama, Central Florida and UT-Chattanooga.

He was 92.Cardinals spokesman Brian Bartow said Tuesday the team had been informed of Herzog’s death by his family. Herzog, who had been at Busch Stadium on April 4 for the Cardinals’ home opener, died on Monday, according to Bartow.
Herzog was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.
In 2010, Herzog was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, where his plaque says he was “renowned for being two steps ahead of opposing managers" and "maximized player contributions with a stern yet good-natured style.”

Rams legend, former NFL MVP quarterback Roman Gabriel dies at age 83
One of the best QBs of his generation, Gabriel still owns the Rams' all-time record with 154 TD passes
Roman Gabriel, one of pro football's best quarterbacks during the 1960s, passed away Saturday morning, his son announced. He was 83 years old."I am sad to announce my father Roman Gabriel passed away peacefully this morning of natural causes at his home . The entire family asked for your prayers , and to please respect our privacy - I love you dad"
In 1962, Gabriel, who played at NC State from 1959-1961, was the No. 1 overall pick in the AFL Draft and the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft. Instead of signing with the AFL's Raiders, Gabriel joined the NFL's Rams, a decision that paid major dividends for the franchise.

Former Bears, Colts GM Bill Tobin dies at age 83
Longtime NFL executive Bill Tobin died at the age of 83, the Bengals announced Friday.
Tobin is best known for being the general manager of the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears and serving as the Detroit Lions' director of player personnel. He was a consultant with the Bengals from 2003 until 2022.
Bengals president Mike Brown called Tobin "a true NFL success story."
"He was a good person and I considered him a good friend," Brown said in a statement. "With Bill, I respected everything he said. I just took it as a given. He had an eye for players and what they would develop into. If he said the guy was a good player, then he was a good player; that's all I would need to know. We will miss him."
