McKinley gives Gallatin rude welcome | FridayNightOhio.com

On a night McKinley led, 16-0, before Gallatin's offense touched the ball and gained 478 yards overall, the Bulldogs showed glimpses of being a dynamic offense.

Tyler Foster and Taron Montgomery lined up at quarterback in the Wildcat formation. Defensive lineman Eric Snow moved to fullback for some I formation, with defensive ends Steve Miller and Se'Von Pittman playing tight ends. A number of potential playmakers emerged.

Todd Porter: McKinley's successful start began Jan. 4 | FridayNightOhio.com

The only area of weakness is in the kicking game. Johnson tried out 170 players. Everyone on the football team. Soccer players. Open tryouts. He couldn?t find one player to kick field goals and PATs.

So McKinley went for two points after every touchdown, and converted on 3-of-4 of them.

"In 1968 Woody Hayes was asked why he went for two against Michigan and he said 'because I couldn't go for three,'" Johnson said. "Two is better than one and our guys are excited about that."

That package includes bringing in Eric Snow, Steve Miller and Se'Von Pittman, all defensive linemen, to move earth and bodies.

'Relentless' Steve Miller focusing on state title

"He played basketball and baseball but his first pick was always football,'' she said. "He started playing football when he was eight years old. He was special then and the coaches had told me it wasn't going to stop there.''

Miller's career will take him to Ohio State as the second recruit in the class of 2011. But first Miller - on The Associated Press East Region 25 list of top recruits - will try to help Canton (Ohio) McKinley reach the Div. I state title game after losing to rival Massillon Washington in the Regional Final last year.

"We should be 15-0,'' he said.

A healthy Miller would be a bonus. The defensive end missed three games in 2009 because of an ankle sprain but that didn't stop him from contributing.

"He became a very good coach for us while he was out,'' Bulldogs coach Ron Johnson said. "He's a very mature young man and a very humble young man and those two qualities have been very good for him as far as being a great leader.''

Miller (6-4, 230) had 48 tackles 16 for losses and seven sacks as a junior after compiling 116 tackles his sophomore year.

He is said to be a smart, disciplined player who, if he can add more pounds during his college career, projects as a Cameron Heyward-type player for the Buckeyes, No. 2 in the Top 25 preseason poll.

"He's extremely strong and relentless,'' Johnson said of Miller, who verbally committed to Ohio State on Oct. 29, 2009.

"It was close to home for my mom to see me. That was the main reason,'' Miller said. Mom is happy, "With Columbus being only a little bit away I guess that's why he decided.''

Johnson said the recruiting process never overwhelmed his star player.

"His maturity is beyond most kids and he never got caught up in all that,'' he said. "There was never any pressure because he could go anywhere he wanted. It was good for him where he doesn't have to have the distraction. He can focus on Canton McKinley and our goals.''

McKinley rallies in second half vs. Hoover | FridayNightOhio.com

It took the fire and brimstone of the halftime locker room to get the Bulldogs going. In the second half, defensive ends Steve Miller and Se?Von Pittman combined for four sacks.

"Because we're McKinley, everybody wants to take us out," Miller said. "We have to be ready at all times."

On fourth-and-2, Farrakhan took a pitch around left end and got a tremendous block from Miller, who lifted his man off the ground.

2011 Recruit Preview - Steve Miller << The Buckeye Battle Cry

tBBC continues our look at Ohio State's 2011 commits, what they have done on the season, a preview of their upcoming game, and a brief synopsis of what to expect when they get to Columbus.

After a bit of a break last week, we're back to take a look at our other amazing defense end, Steve Miller, the counter point to Kenny Hayes. Miller, a 6'5" 240 lb DE from Canton McKinley, is yet another in a long line of Ohio kids that have been Buckeyes their whole life, and couldn't wait to commit to Ohio State.

Steve was probably the first recruit outside of Braxton Miller that was talked about in 2011 class, as Florida came calling early on with heavy interest. I currently have Steve Miller as the #5 player in the state, with offers from basically everyone in the Big T1e1n, Florida, Notre Dame, WVU, UCLA, Stanford, and Syracuse.

Steve is not the only talented DE on his high school team, as his counterpart is a highly recruited junior, Se'Von Pittman. Pittman currently doesn't have an offer from Ohio State, but he could very well earn one. Currently McKinley is 7-2 on the year, and has a huge game this weekend against their rival Massillon Washington (7-2) and Buckeye commit Devin Smith. Win or lose both team should make the playoffs.

Miller has not been as productive in the stat department this year as last. Last year he was up in the double digit range for sacks, this year he is only at 2 due to a ton of double teams, and chip blocks from the rb's.
