Instead of all the other reasons to find fault with a dropoff in recruiting, you're using their lack of presence on a list of elite pros? They're not eligible to play in the NFL yet, at least not the high schoolers.

A huge one, especially the floor of the defense for the good but not superstar players like Powell, perry, Lewis, Bennett, etc
It's hard to find a generational player. OSU was spoiled by 3 almost at once. Despite all of nicks dominance with the greatest talent stockpiling and success in the history of the sport, it has taken him 15 years to finally have a guy (Anderson) who is in the debate as a prospect but still #4 among them at rush end (Allen was a monster but not truly the same position). That's how rare those 3 DEs are.
OSU is not struggling because Harrison and Vincent are not pro bowlers. Even Nick was just a bandaid in 2018. OSU's defense is struggling because guys like that aren't close to all B1G performances so far. Let's hope stronger coaching and schemes will change that.
It's great to find the next Denzel Burke. They need a lot more Doran Grant and Dustin Foxs. Other than 2016, they usually play their best defenses on the backs of the Foxes or Lees or Schlegels. The stars mean very little if not well schemed and supported by solid running mates (see Shazier/Roby 13, NBosa/Young/etc 18).
And whatever the downturn in defensive recruiting may have been as it relates to superstars, it's odd that they've been so sparse on the good players.

On the field, imo, it was horrific coaching in '18. To field a bad defense with that level of talent is actually hard to do.
In '19, that all-time '17 recruiting class was just too good to be that bad and they had a year of competent defensive coaching.
'20 and '21 on the field are the results of the near complete swing and miss of the '18 and '19 recruiting classes AND shitty coaching. They went to reload and had the gang that can't shoot straight firing on empty cylinders.
Let's pray to sweet Woody in that Horseshoe in the sky that we've got some actual coaching to develop the talent from the '21 and '22 classes. Probably going to need a healthy dose of portal help as well.

I think we grew a lot as a unit — especially D-line and as a defense. We plugged in guys after injury when people were counting us out after some big injuries. But yeah, we just showed that we can fight and we’re going to keep fighting.”
Bosa was asked about how special it is to play for the 49ers and how it feels to have this era come to an end, which was possibly a hint at the future of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Bosa said that playing for the franchise is “super special,” but pushed back on this being the end of an era.
“It’s super special,” Bosa continued. “I don’t think the era comes to an end. I think we have a lot to build off of from this year and I’m just proud of all the guys that I play with.”
