Zach Thomas says he and Mike Vrabel have formed an unlikely bond
Chiefs linebacker Zach Thomas said Saturday evening that he might not have expected it, but he and fellow linebacker Mike Vrabel are hitting it off.

The two used to be rivals in the AFC East, Thomas with Miami and Vrabel in New England. Back then, Thomas had a pointed opinion about his rival.

?I?ve always hated that guy,? Thomas said with a laugh. ?He was in New England, and I was in Miami every year. I always thought he was a real jerk. But I?ll tell you what: I really like playing beside him. Being veterans, our communication clicks.?

Veterans key to Chiefs? rebuilding project
by Associated Press
Friday, August 14, 2009

RIVER FALLS, Wis. ? Mike Vrabel lingered on the practice field, trading blows with defensive line coach Tim Krumrie like Rock?em Sock?em robots, pausing every few seconds to get instruction before wailing away again.

Most of his younger teammates already had headed to the locker room and peeled off their pads, yet there was Vrabel, legs weary, sweat pouring off his chin, a 13-year veteran still trying to get better.

Chiefs coach Todd Haley couldn?t help but smile at the image.

For a young team, coming off the worst season in franchise history, this was exactly what the first-year coach had in mind when he brought in Vrabel and all those other veterans to provide the foundation for the massive rebuilding project in Kansas City.

?As young a group as we had, we just felt it was real important to get guys in here to help kind of guide this young group because we can only do so much as a coaching staff,? Haley said. ?As I?ve said, a picture?s worth a thousand words, so if you put a picture of Mike Vrabel out there doing it the way it has to be done, you know it?s going to accelerate the learning for everyone.?

Trade was something Vrabel had to deal with

MIKE VRABEL
Blunt, not bitter

By Christopher L. Gasper
September 27, 2009

Coach Bill Belichick called the venerable linebacker and told him he had been traded to the Chiefs in a deal that would eventually ship both Vrabel and quarterback Matt Cassel to Kansas City for a second-round pick, used to select safety Pat Chung.

Vrabel, who always had a close relationship with Belichick, joking with the coach in a way few other players could, simply said, ?Thanks,?? and then called his new boss, Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli.

That was the last time Belichick and Vrabel spoke.

?There is no reason for us to talk,?? said Vrabel. ?I don?t think Bill would ever call me before in an offseason when I played for him, so why would he call me now???

Belichick defused the idea of a cold war.

?I don?t have any problem talking to Mike at all,?? said Belichick, who cited the tampering rules in the NFL regarding talking to a player from another team.

After silently playing through injuries and sacrificing his sack totals for most of his eight seasons in New England for the betterment of the team, Vrabel isn?t bitter, just blunt.

?There are still guys I played with there,?? said Vrabel, who watched some of the Patriots? season opener. ?I hope Ty [Warren] plays great. I hope Jerod [Mayo] and Vince [Wilfork] and Mike Wright, all those guys I played a lot of times with, played years with, I hope nothing but the best for those guys.??

Former teammates still talk to Vrabel, including quarterback Tom Brady.

?We text from time to time, but he?s certainly missed in the locker room,?? said Brady. ?We all miss him, but that?s the way it goes.??

Chiefs' Mike Vrabel is the Best Offensive Defensive Player in NFL History

OK, so what is this headline all about? It's Mike Vrabel's touchdown reception in the Kansas City Chiefs 26-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys yesterday. It marked the 9th regular season score for the "tight end" whose primary position happens to be on the other side of the ball. He also has two postseason scores.

For players whose primary position is on defense, no one is even close to Vrabel in terms of offensive production. Remember William 'The Fridge' Perry? He famously scored a rushing touchdown in the Bears '85 Super Bowl and Walter Payton did not. He has three career touchdowns. Deion Sanders got in on the offensive act scoring three touchdowns in his career.

But those two combined, both tied for second place, don't match Vrabel's total touchdowns.

He stepped into Sunday's game and was announced as an eligible receiver. Play one was a handoff to Larry Johnson. Play two, Vrabel lined up as the left tight end and simply broke free for a score on a little out pattern. Easy enough.

After the game, we asked Glenn Dorsey if he knew that Vrabel had such great hands.

"Oh yeah," Dorsey responded, "I see it everyday in practice. He's a tremendous player. And he's a leader for us so I'm not surprised he made a tremendous play."

Everyday in practice? You would think a gimmicky play like that wouldn't work so many times but apparently it does. Vrabel's career high is three touchdowns in one season. He's on pace pace for 3+ this season and, judging by Dorsey's comments, there could be more coming.

Mike Vrabel

As a Buckeye: A four-year letterman-winner (1993 to '96), two-time Big Ten defensive player of the year and two-time All-American, Vrabel was OSU's sack master, finishing his career with a school-best 36.

As a pro: A third-round draft pick by the Steelers in 1997, Vrabel languished in Pittsburgh in four seasons with an undefined role. His career took off when he went to New England, where he had 48 sacks in eight seasons.

The skinny: Vrabel played on four Super Bowl teams for the Patriots, winning three, before moving on to Kansas City this year. Throw to him: Vrabel has nine career regular-season receptions, all for TDs, and two more in Super Bowls.

Vrabel out indefinitely for Chiefs
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on November 20, 2009

Chiefs linebacker Mike Vrabel is expected to miss this week's Chiefs game. According to the Kansas City Star, he might miss the next few as well. (Can hear the jokes in the comments already. Vrabel is on the Chiefs?)

It's been a tough transition for Vrabel and fellow former Patriot Matt Cassel in Kansas City. The team has won two games and both players have struggled.

Vrabel has one sack and 33 tackles, good for fourth on the team. Under constant pressure and with little help around him, Cassel has averaged 5.68 yards per attempt, which only ranks ahead of four qualifying quarterbacks. He averaged 7.2 in New England.

Cassel will be in Kansas City a while, but Vrabel likely won't be. He is 34 years old and is a free agent after the season.

Chiefs LB Vrabel Lets Emotions Get Best of Him, Bud Adams Style
by Joel Thorman on Dec 6, 2009

In the fourth quarter of Sunday's 44-13 loss to the Denver Broncos, one of the leaders of the Kansas City Chiefs defense let his emotions get the best of him.

On a fourth and one, nursing a big lead in the fourth quarter, the Broncos opted to go for it. And go for it they did all the way to the end zone via an 18 yard run by Knowshon Moreno.

After the game, Chiefs LB Mike Vrabel wasn't bothered by the Broncos decision to go for it.

"They can call whatever they wanna run," Vrabel said, "and go for it on fourth down every single time if they want. We just have to stop them. I've been on the other side when things are great, and being on this side, ain't so good."

But during the game, Vrabel appeared to have a problem with it. Frustration manifested itself Bud Adams style, by Vrabel flipping the bird in the direction of the Broncos bench after Moreno's touchdown run. He continued to walk back to the bench in obvious frustration.

Does he think the league will fine him for it?

"I don't know," he said quietly after the game. "I think that they can take a look at it and do with it what they want."
