DE Melvin Fellows (official thread)

I am pretty sure Antonio James got offered by OSU after he committed to Illinois.

As for Fellows I hope he stays committed to us. He seemed to really love Champaign and Coach Zook. It's very early though so anything can happen.

James never got an offer from tOSU...

Melvin now has the offer he's hoped for... We'll see what he does sooner rather than later IMO...

I'm still struggling to understand why he committed to Illinois so early. He supposedly dreamed of being recruited by tOSU yet he commits to Illinois well before his senior season. Maybe he didn't consider himself a legit candidate to be offered by tOSU? Itchy trigger finger? Just guessing here...

I guess if you accept an offer early, it is like an insurance policy. You are pretty much guaranteed to receive a scholarship to college regardless of how your senior year goes (as long as you keep your nose clean). and since it is only verbal, the school is bound to it, but not the player.

Probably not the reason in this case, but it could be for some kids

I don't believe this is correct. It doesn't guarantee anyone anything.

It is unusual for a school to pull the scolly away from a recruit who has verbally accepted one that was offered to him unless....academic, or legal issues come into play.

Not saying it never happens, but it is rare

From the OSU site...reacps Garfields struggle this year...and talks about trying to stay humble after the offers started rolling in. Talks about why he chose Illinois and talks about why he really likes OSU.

Sounds like he'll be visiting in the near future. The '09 D-Line is looking pretty healthy.

Bill Kurelic reports that Jim Heacock visited Fellows at his school today, and now has set up a visit to Ohio State for this weekend. It's on the BN *free* forum but I don't have an official news link. Kurelic's information is good though. Ohio State maybe finally is trying to steal a Zooker rather than vice versa.

When/if this happens it will be a huge pickup for us...

Fellows has amazing explosivness off the edge, he plays a little high, but he throws lineman off him, he gets by them with speed, and just unloads on the Qb's and rb's...

With Simon and hopefully Fellows soon, we are looking at being loaded on the D-line with especially if we can pull in Wells in this class...

By Bill Greene...confirms the earlier report by BK that he is visiting OSU this weekend, depending on whether his father can accompany him or not. Says he does not regret making an early decision to verbal to Illinois.
