Post #7330 Re: Bill, Lawrence Wilson still solid ND??? Reply

Wilson is said to be rethinking his commitment in the wake of Willingham's firing. He told our friends at Blue & Gold Illustrated that he is now unsure of that program's direction and wants to take some time to ponder today's proceedings.

WOOO Boy

His Dad is PISSED

Doesn't sound like ND will get a second look unless they make a huge commitment to him, which won't happen unless they make a quick hire. He says lots of people are calling.

Lawrence says he is officially re-opening his recruitment. He is going to see if he can visit both Pitt and tOSU (his other favorites) plus Wisky & Purdue.

a few Wilson quotes

”I’m definitely going to reconsider my commitment,” said Wilson. “That was terrible what happened.”

”I really liked coach Willingham,” said Wilson. “I liked all the coaching staff. I really wanted to play for them.”

”I’m definitely going to reopen my recruiting,” Wilson said. “Notre Dame doesn’t have a coach so I have to look at other options. I will listen to what the new coach has to say, but I’ll look at all my other options.”

Wilson rethinks Notre Dame plan
Wednesday, December 01, 2004
Tim Rogers
Plain Dealer Reporter

St. Vincent-St. Mary two-way end Lawrence Wilson said he will withdraw his verbal commitment to attend the University of Notre Dame following the firing of head coach Tyrone Willingham on Tuesday.

Wilson, who was named to the all-Ohio team on Tuesday, told the Irish coaching staff two weeks ago that he would sign a national letter of intent in February to attend the school. He said he will call the school this week to cancel his plans.

"The firing of coach Willingham is very disappointing," Wilson said Tuesday during a phone interview. "I am very unhappy. Coach Willingham and the assistant coaches were one of the reasons I decided to attend Notre Dame."

Wilson's father, Eugene, spoke with Willingham shortly after it was announced that he was out of a job after three years and a 21-15 record in South Bend, Ind.

"The whole thing is a train wreck," said Eugene Wilson.

Lawrence Wilson, also a standout basketball player, said the recruiting process was reopened by Notre Dame's decision. Ohio State and Pittsburgh, two of his final three choices, re-enter as possible candidates, he said. A recruiter from the University of Michigan made plans to visit the family's home in Akron later this week.

Wilson, a 6-5, 240-pound two-way end who carries a 3.2 grade-point average, said he has not ruled out Notre Dame.

"I am not going to attend a school if I don't know the coach and if my parents don't know him," Wilson explained. "I will wait and see who Notre Dame hires. If they call, I will listen and I will talk it over with my parents. I will not rule them out, at least not now."

Wilson's older brother, Eugene, is a sophomore at Ohio State.

Wilson, 17, was named as the Division IV defensive player of the year in the Northeast Ohio Inland district on Nov. 19 and was named first-team all-Ohio on Tuesday.

No coach Willingham, no recruit
St. V-M's Wilson won't be going to Notre Dame
By David Lee Morgan Jr.
Beacon Journal staff writer

Lawrence Wilson was just finishing up basketball practice early Wednesday evening, but the St. Vincent-St. Mary senior had football on his mind.

Wilson, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound mountain of muscle was a star defensive end for the Irish, was planning on continuing his football career at Notre Dame and made an oral commitment to play there.

But with the firing of former Notre Dame coach Tyrone Willingham on Monday, Wilson has changed his decision.

``I don't think I'm going there now,'' said Wilson, who finished with 67 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss and six sacks this season for St. V-M. ``One of the main reasons why I chose Notre Dame was because of coach Willingham and his staff. They made me feel so comfortable, and I was shocked when I heard the news. You can't be committed to a school that doesn't have a coach.''

During a visit to Notre Dame last month, Wilson said he talked to officials in the athletic program and they didn't give him any indication that Willingham, who compiled a 6-5 record this year, would be fired.

Wilson said he felt relieved after he made his decision to play at Notre Dame, because he wouldn't have to deal with the recruiting anymore.

``It felt like a burden was lifted off me when I made my decision,'' he said. ``I didn't want to have to keep worrying about it during the basketball season.''

What this means now is that Wilson is back on the market as a Division I prospect.

Before deciding on Notre Dame, Wilson said Ohio State, Michigan and Pittsburgh were high on his list.

And they still are.

``I think somebody from Michigan is coming to see me (today),'' Wilson said.

Willingham Firing Leaves Wilson Wondering
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chris Nida
BuckeyeSports.com Staff Writer

The college football coaching carousel has begun to turn, and nothing spun it more wildly than Notre Dame's firing of third-year head coach Tyrone Willingham.

Lawrence Wilson is back to being an uncommitted prospect.
News of Willingham's axing came as a surprise to many around the college football world, none more so than the verbal commitments to Willingham's program. Included among that group was Lawrence Wilson, a standout defensive end/tight end prospect from Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary who Ohio State was recruiting hard before he pledged to the Irish in mid-October.

The Wilson family was particularly shocked by Willingham's sudden departure because they had received assurances from athletic director Kevin White that Willingham would be around for a while.

"It really bothered me," Wilson told BuckeyeSports.com. "My dad talked to the athletic director when we went on the official visit and he said Coach Willingham was going to be there a little while. For him to get fired like that..."

Wilson didn't finish his sentence, but the point had been made. He withdrew his verbal commitment to ND shortly after learning of the firing of Willingham and is now once again on the open recruiting market.

That could be good news for Buckeye fans, as OSU was one of Wilson's finalists along with Notre Dame. However, Pitt also put on a strong push and is receiving strong consideration from Wilson, and Michigan -- who has not yet offered -- contacted Wilson shortly after learning of his decommitment.

So too did Buckeye offensive coordinator and line coach Jim Bollman, who called Wilson on Tuesday evening.

"He was basically talking about how they fired him and how kind of messed up it was for me," Wilson said. "I told him I withdrew my commitment and he said Ohio State was still interested."

The Irish are down several pegs now because of the way they handled Willingham's firing, but they still can't be totally counted out. Who Notre Dame eventually hires -- be it the much-rumored Urban Meyer of Utah or somebody else -- could still have a bearing on Wilson's decision.

For that reason, and because Wilson is now in the midst of basketball season, he's not in a hurry to make another commitment.

"I'm not really in a rush," he said. "I'm just going to wait things out. I still could probably go to Notre Dame. I'm just going to see who the new coach is."

Obviously, it won't be Willingham, which would have been Wilson's far and away first preference. He talked to the head coach the day before he was set to face USC last Saturday and said he was upbeat in preparing for the nation's No. 1 team.

Four days later, Willingham was out as Notre Dame's head coach. Most agree he has publicly handled his situation with class, and he was no different in speaking with Wilson's father shortly after his firing.

Said Wilson of Willingham, "He just said there were injustices in the world and you just have to deal with it."

I fully expect him to commit to PITT unless OSU blows him away.
Not sure why you would think that most considered it a OSU vs. ND battle the whole time with PITT running a distant 3rd but It sounds like he's in no hurray to commit so we might be waitin on LW till February...

Just a gut feeling, but I think ND will hire Urban and Urban will tie up the loose strings with LW and Lawrence will be an Irish
