DE Lawrence Wilson (official thread)

FYI, according to BSB:

Rivals.com ranks Wilson the nation's No. 12 weakside defensive end, though the Buckeyes staff appears to want him to play at tight end, where OSU currently sports a decided lack of depth.

Could be the way to get Frost back at DE, where he looked great in the spring. Not sure where the TE info comes from though, because Wilson signed his LOI after the official press release from OSU.

Lawrence Wilson is looking forward to the North-South game.

"It's very exciting. You get to play with all these great players and test yourself against Ohio's best. It's very, very exciting," said Wilson.

Wilson left little doubt about his competitive nature when he talked about his expectations for the game.

"I came here to win. I'm excited to have fun too but I want to win," he said.

Wilson has everything it takes to be a contributor early at OSU, including a serious upward curve in his size.

"I weight 255, 258, somewhere around there. I played at maybe 230 in high school. I've training really hard about three days a week with a trainer and I've gotten considerably bigger," said Wilson.

Wilson said that the new-found size has not affected his impressive speed.

I was clocked at 4.56 (in the 40) a couple of weeks ago. I think I could run 4.51, 4.52," Wilson said.

I can't give away details obviously, but Lawrence Wilson sounds like a great kid who speaks well and is driven to succeed this year. He is ready to play wherever they need him (DE/TE), and has bulked up to 255+. If Richardson and the rest do not get it done, look for LWilson and DWorthington to push them hard for PT.

I new this kid was talented , but I thought it would take a year or 2 to get his weight up. Wrong! "Skinny" Larry is 255-260 and running a 4.56 40... He's ready to play THIS year!

DE or TE ?

I think DE, he's got that good first step! Ala, Will Smith!

Sounds like he's really playing well at practices...

Wilson Making a Name
By John Porentas
The North-South All-Star game takes place Saturday night in Crew Stadium. The teams have been working out for a week at Otterbine University in Westerville, Ohio, and in a week, a player or players can stand out. The standouts this year can be summed up in two words.
Lawrence Wilson.
Wilson has wowed them in North/South game preparations. At 260 pounds, Wilson is big and strong enough to be a physical defensive end, yet possesses 4.55 speed that allows him to run around blockers. According to the high school coaches participating in the game, Wilson has been nearly unblockable in practice sessions. A player who has seen Wilson up close and personal is incoming OSU offensive lineman Alex Boone. Boone has been impressed.
"He's tough," said Boone.

"His speed, he's quick, his moves. He's got killer moves, that's for sure. Off the ball, it's like he knows the snap count. It's amazing, and that's one thing about him that I love," Boone said with obvious respect for Wilson.
"I've only gone against him a couple of times and so far he's been knocking me around,
Boone said.
Wilson has been a challenge for Boone and everyone else that has tried to block him in camp, and Boone feels that practicing against that caliber of competition will help make him a better player, along with everyone else on the offensive side of the ball opposite Wilson.
"It makes everybody better. It makes me better, it makes the quarterback better because he has to roll out and running away from him, it just makes everybody play better," he said.
For his part, Wilson remains quite unassuming despite his strong performance in the All-Star camp.
"It's harder than I expected it to be. Camp is going pretty good," said Wilson with understated reserve.
"Practices have been pretty hard, so everyone is pretty much sore."
Wilson was actually reluctant to answer when asked how he fared against Boone when they lined up against one another, but finally 'fessed up.
"We did a couple of pass rush drills and I lined up against him. I got past him," said Wilson with a little chuckle that was more one of pride over his accomplishment than one of derision for his competition.
Wilson is showing all the signs of a star in the making, but stardom does not seem to be part of what makes him tick.
"I want to win," he said simply when asked what his goals for this week are. "That's my ultimate goal, to win."

OZone
DE Lawrence Wilson: The coaches raved about Wilson in North-South camp, but he did not have a big game. Wilson has all the tools it takes to be a big-time college player, but sometimes tends to give up on plays too soon. He had no solos in the Big 33 until he got fired up after a controversial call by an official, then he got a sack. He needs to play with that kind of intensity all the time. We see him as a redshirt.

Sticking with the defense, defensive end Lawrence Wilson has made an impression, particularly on some of the players on offense who have to deal with him.

"I have to go on the defensive side and a guy named Lawrence Wilson, a defensive end. His athletic ability is, whew, bar none," said OSU quarterback Troy Smith when asked to single out freshmen who have caught his eye.

"Lawrence is stepping up and doing some great things for the defense," Smith said. "Jim Heacock says that there's no question that Lawrence Wilson is going to play," said OSU Head Coach Jim Tressel.
