DE Jack Sawyer (All B1G)

PFF TOP 101. Speaking of Marvin Harrison Jr., Pro Football Focus released its PFF College 101 for the 2023 college football season last week. Harrison was featured on the list — shocker, I know — and so was Jack Sawyer.

NO. 34 - JACK SAWYER

11W quote: "If Sawyer can perform at the same level he reached toward the end of last season and sustain it for all of 2024, he could become a first-team All-American next year. When was the last time Ohio State had one of those at the defensive end? The answer is Chase Young in 2019."

Ohio State Defensive End Jack Sawyer Feels He Let His City Down in Losses to Michigan, Wakes Up Every Day Motivated for Better Senior Season

“For me, I love it,” Sawyer said. “I love that Columbus takes Ohio State football so seriously because it's what I grew up doing. I grew up going to school, third and fourth grade, and that's all we talked about was Ohio State football. What happened the previous weekend, or we can't believe that this or this didn't happen, you know what I mean? So it's just kind of what I grew up doing.”

That’s why Sawyer’s taken the Buckeyes’ past three results against Michigan especially hard, and it’s why – whether recruiting other teammates to come back or improving his own craft – he’s doing everything in his power to correct the corrupted course of the last several seasons.

“When I committed to Ohio State, we had just played in a national championship,” Sawyer said. “Coming off of three or four Big Ten championship wins, haven’t lost to ‘The Team Up North’ in eight, nine years. And then when my class gets there, it kind of reverses. And I think for me, being the type of guy I am, I think naturally I felt like we let, I let not only Ryan Day down, but I let the city down.

“So for me, it's all about coming back. And a lot of us, we all feel the same way, too, is that we can't, we weren't gonna leave here without having one more shot at doing this the right way and leaving here better than what we came here for.”

JACK SAWYER. OK. It's Wednesday. It's time to move from the Ohio State season opener and look to Western Michigan. But let me make one more note about the Buckeyes from Saturday:

Jack Sawyer.

That's it. That's the section.

No, of course it's not.

Sawyer's performance on Saturday deserves praise. While he didn't appear in the box score much (two tackles), Sawyer made life hell for Akron quarterback Ben Finley – so much so that Finley exited after 35 minutes and received medical attention for the remainder of the contest. Just look at this 14-second reel from Dane Brugler of The Athletic:

Geez, ow.

Those collisions should have come with a "BAM!" "POW!" "WHAM!" from the old Batman comics — that's how painful each of them looked. Finley will be in the training room for the rest of the season. He will also have nightmares about Sawyer for the rest of his life.

PRESSURES GALORE AND A SACK! Another Buckeye that has been impressive to start the year has been Jack Sawyer. In Ohio State’s wins over Akron and Western Michigan, the 6-foot-5, 260-pound defensive end has recorded just five tackles and one sack. While that could seem lackluster to some, one look at advanced statistics reveals Sawyer’s impact has been much greater than box score contributions.

According to Pro Football Focus, Sawyer leads Ohio State with 10 quarterback pressures this season. The next closest Buckeyes are Tyleik Williams (four), JT Tuimoloau (three) and Kenyatta Jackson, Caden Curry and Ty Hamilton (two). Sawyer also leads Ohio State’s defensive line room in pass-rush win rate at 24.1%, with Eddrick Houston (20%), Mitchell Melton (16.7%), Tuimoloau (16%) and Jackson (15.8%) coming in behind him.

I don’t need to ask if that’s good.

That’s good.

From breaking an Akron quarterback’s body and spirit to recording his first sack of the season on Saturday, Sawyer has been a menace in Ohio State’s two victories. I hope he continues this level of performance as the year continues. The Buckeyes will need him when more formidable opponents like Oregon, Penn State and “That Team Up North” arrive on the schedule.
