DE Chase Young (Nagurski, Hendricks, Bednarik, Silver Football, NFL DROY, New Orleans Saints)

“Well, he's been doing real well,” Rivera said ahead of the draft. “He's here today again, and it's a great sight to see. I got an opportunity to spend little time with him and he's fired up. He's really focused and he's attacking his rehab. It’s an opportunity for him to meet Al and listen to Al, Al Bellamy, and listen to his plan and how he's mapped things out. Working with the folks we have down in the training room has been really good. I mean, this past week, and now heading into this week, is an exciting time. We've had very good participation this year. We really have. It’s really cool to see all the players that are here and watching them work out.”

The Washington Commanders placed defensive end Chase Young on the reserve/physically unable to perform list Tuesday, leaving him unavailable for the first four games of the season.

Young opened camp on the active/PUP list after tearing his right ACL and MCL in a Nov. 14 game vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Young underwent reconstructive surgery, lengthening his recovery time.

Washington made the move to get down to the required 80 players by Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET deadline.

Chase Young injury news: Washington Commanders DE return action 'few weeks away or sooner' depending on exam

Chase Young has yet to play in 2022 for the Washington Commanders. The former Ohio State star and No. 2 overall pick was recovering from a torn ACL suffered last season. It appears his return is now near, according to a report from 106.7 The Fan’s Ben Krimmel.

“Chase Young's return to action may still be a few weeks away, or it could be much sooner, depending on the results of an examination this week,” Krimmel wrote. “Young, who sustained a torn ACL in his right knee and damaged his patella tendon during the then-Washington Football Team's 29-19 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Nov. 14 last year, is set to see orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews this week to get an evaluation on his progress. Ben Standig of The Athletic was first to report the news Tuesday, saying, 'A source with direct knowledge of the situation' indicated the evaluation will not occur until later this week. That could mean Young will not return to practice ahead of Washington hosting Green Bay at FedEx Field on Sunday.”

Chase Young injury update: Ex-Ohio State star's NFL season debut could be delayed despite earlier reports

After initial reports indicated Chase Young could make his season debut for the Washington Commanders on Sunday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported there is doubt to that forecast. The Commanders come off a win over the previously-unbeaten Philadelphia Eagles and could benefit from Young's return from last year's knee injury, but Washington is reportedly practicing caution. Young, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, has been sidelined since tearing his ACL and MCL in Week 10 of last season.

"Despite early optimism, it might be too early for #Commanders pass-rusher Chase Young to play this Sunday vs. the #Texans, source said," Rapoport wrote on Twitter. "His 21-day window closes on Nov. 23 and the #Falcons game on the 27th sounds like a better target. He's doing well, just may not be ready yet."

Commanders activate star defensive end Chase Young, status against Falcons remains unclear

Ron Rivera said he is not sure if Young will play Sunday against Atlanta

The Washington Commanders are activating defensive end Chase Young to the 53-man roster, head coach Ron Rivera announced on Monday.

The former NFL Rookie of the Year suffered a torn ACL in November 2021 during a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Young underwent surgery and was able to return to the practice field earlier this month.

Washington's 21-day window to activate Young from the physically unable to perform list would have closed on Wednesday.
