DC Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

It's also easier to send the apologize troll then to get down in the mud and wrestle with everybody about why they were not wrong and why their opinion is still valid.... As a former hater (you don't learn on the job at Ohio State) I find it crazy people cannot just sit back and enjoy the show. We only get so many seasons and games to enjoy in our lifetime, I can't imagine caring more about being rIgHt than realizing what we are witnessing happens once in a decade. 2002. 2014. 2025.

This quote from an Ohio State football coach is the stuff of legends

This quote will get Ohio State football fans fired up.

I doubt if you can find an Ohio State fan who doesn’t know the story of Woody Hayes being asked why he went for two when his team already led Michigan 48-0. The legendary coach replied with the legendary quote, “Because I couldn’t go for three.” Thanks to an exchange between coaches during the Cotton Bowl, Buckeye fans have another quote that is the stuff of legends.

After the Buckeyes scored to take a 21-14 lead in the fourth quarter, Texas rapidly moved the ball to the Ohio State one-yard-line with just over four minutes to play. Most believed the Longhorns would easily tie the game, including someone on the OSU staff, who said into the coaches’ headset, “Boy, they scored fast there.” Without batting an eye, defensive coordinator Jim Knowles growled, “They ain’t scored yet.” And they didn’t.

It may not quite be Rear Admiral David Faragut’s “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead,” which was said during the 1864 Battle of Mobile Bay, but Knowles’ declaration is full of the same spit-in-the-eye defiance to a dire situation. While the players on the Ohio State defense were not aware of their coach’s words, they played with the same defiance.

They simply refused to allow Texas to cross the goal line. It’s a sequence of plays that began with backup defensive tackle Kayden McDonald blowing up the middle of the line of scrimmage and ended with Jack Sawyer’s one-man tour de force to put the game away. An epic goal line stand that will go down in Ohio State history and reflects the pugnacious attitude of their coach. "They ain’t scored yet.”

Honestly all the college awards are a joke. Their all popularity contests, case in point Ferentz having more B1G COY than Tressel and Meyer and Day

He was being questioned for sure and rightfully so. People are swinging way too far to the other end of the spectrum with the recency bias here. The big question when Knowles came in was could he do a 1 year turnaround or does he need to have a senior laden group. The understanding being, you don’t get 3-4 years at Ohio State to get it right.

Well here we are and it’s taken a senior laden defense and the inbound transfer of an elite safety to get to this level. The slate gets wiped clean next year.

It’s the same guy whose defenses got exposed badly in ‘22. Is that the real Knowles or is it what we have seen in this 3 game playoff heater?

Like most things it’s probably firmly somewhere in the middle.
Exposed badly how? We all know what was going on with the SCUM game and Georgia's offense that year was Top 5 and effortlessly dropped 65 on the national runner-up a week after the Buckeyes gave up 42. If giving up 42 to that Georgia squad is "exposed" then what would you call Georgia's defense giving up 41 to an offense that came into that game at best 70% and finished somewhere around 40% due to the injuries?

knowles came in stating that there were clear expectations from him for a quick turnaround… he didn’t shy away from that or make excuses or hide.

has he benefited from a more experienced squad this year? sure, but he also has always been clear that the schemes he runs have a lot to do with the players being able to understand what they’re supposed to do. and, to be fair, his teams have improved every year and there’s not been a lot of backsliding… has he had bad games when he made mistakes (too conservative or too aggressive), yes. but he’s also owned that.

i think that johnson’s stubbornness, which seems to have been handled with some head-knocking by day, got in the way of what knowles could deploy last year and for the first half of this year.

You can't convince me Ferentz is more popular than Tressel/Meyer/Day... I think of these more as a consolation prize than popularity contests

If Leonard takes some of the shots he has, but it’s Ransom, Simon, Styles or Downs laying the hit, he isn’t going to finish the game.

Those guys are punishing people.
I believe we stick more to rushing 4 and bottling Leonard into a spy situation like we did against Oregon. The level our DL is playing at now allows us to do that, they are still getting pressure and stops with a pretty base defense because of the DL.

Our back 7 is beating everyone up and making every hit felt hard by opposing teams. Even if a pass hits the hands of a receiver, often it is incomplete because they get slobber knocked. You have to dial up pressure occasionally, but emphasis on occasionally with this DL.
Its surely fair to note this particular group is experienced and that's to Knowles benefit. I dont anticipate next year's defense to be better than this year's. But, I do anticipate that, unlike 22, his system is installed now. I dont anticipate a drop off which would suggest his D works in 4 year cycles.
There will be some level of drop off, but only because you can't be the #1 defense every year and most of our starters will be gone after this year. But I agree with his system and the recruiting efforts on defense, I don't see a huge drop off at all with Knowles. Plenty of talent to work with and the system is well in place.

i agree.

ultimately, what i see is that the DL is able, finally, to get home (even with a three-man front), because the secondary is not allowing receivers to get open.

I can absolutely buy the LJ sr angle as more info has come to light about it.

It’s a different issue that it was allowed to happen at all and then continue for a while but that isn’t 100% on Knowles.

He’s got Downs back next year so there is that. I don’t think he sucks like I did at first but I’m not buying into the hype fully either. Buckeye nation has an echo chamber of hype to rival, if not out do, its Lunatic Fringe.

Somewhere in the middle reality lies.

To me, other DC experiences dictated me never wanting Knowles gone, but calling for some adaptation. We've been feast or famine at DC. I think Knowles has a Billy Badass coaching style but a scheme that suits defending a modern offense.

That said, next year will be a challenge. But for all I care about right now is winning a title.

So you’re warming up to the idea of maybe saying Kownles is a competent DC.
