DC Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

I keep seeing comparisons b/w Knowles and Coombs, but I don't see them as helpful comparators. I haven't seen what I would think is a better comparison: Knowles and Grinch. Grinch was an, at least before he got to Columbus, aggressive and experienced, although young, defensive coordinator at a middle of the conference Power 5 school who got results with 2 and 3 star kids (sound familiar?). We thought, great, he should be able to kill it with our 4 and 5 stars, etc. He, it's fair to say, I think, didn't work out. I'm not saying that I think Knowles will be The Return of the Grinch, but I think an analysis of their similarities and differences would be more heuristic than talking at all about Coombs, an Ohio State assistant coach who went to the pros for two or three years and came back, but had, and some would argue still doesn't have, any defensive coordinator experience.

While Grinch didn’t work out, I don’t think that’s 100% the fault of Grinch. He didn’t even get to implement his defense.

Their age and relative experience before coming to OSU makes Knowles-Grinch a pretty uneven comparison too. Knowles has been running defenses for a long time, at multiple schools.
