Football clearly is a popular sport at Ashland University, which some see making the Division II top 25 this season. AU head coach Lee Owens opened camp with more than 130 players, including Division I transfers like quarterback Billy Cundiff (University of Connecticut) and defensive back Sirjo Welch (Ohio State). Owens is a former University of Akron head coach and Ohio State assistant.

Dispatch

Sirjo Welch , a former Beechcroft football standout who decided to leave Ohio State during the summer, has enrolled at the University of Cincinnati and plans to begin practicing with the team soon. Welch had been in academic trouble at Ohio State and was trying to regain his eligibility during summer quarter. He hopes to become eligible to play for the Bearcats for the start of next season.
