At this time, Ill. police are not considering longtime NFL veteran Shaun Gayle (23) a suspect in his girlfriend's shooting death.

DEERFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The pregnant girlfriend of former Chicago Bears All-Pro safety Shaun Gayle was found shot to death in a suburban Chicago condominium Thursday after police responded to a neighbor's report of screams coming from the home.
Gayle, a member of the Bears team that won Super Bowl XX in 1985, was not considered a suspect in Rhoni Reuter's death and went to the Deerfield Police Department when he learned of the shooting, police said in a statement.
Rhoni, 42, sustained multiple gunshot wounds, and was pregnant when she died, said Lake County Coroner Dr. Richard Keller. Gayle was the father of the unborn child, police said.
A telephone message was left Thursday afternoon at a listing for Gayle in Chicago. No one answered the door at his town home Thursday, but plainclothes police officers were seen removing a bag of garbage from outside the home and putting it in the trunk of an unmarked vehicle.
"We're not making any comments, obviously he's upset," Terry Rizzo, Gayle's attorney, told reporters. "When he's ready to talk to the media, we'll talk."
The shooting was believed to have happened about 7:55 Thursday morning, Deerfield police said. There was no sign of forced entry and nothing was taken from the condo.

Shaun Lanard Gayle (born March 8, 1962 in Newport News, Virginia) is a former American football cornerback/safety in the NFL. He played twelve seasons, eleven for the Chicago Bears (1984-1994), and one for the San Diego Chargers (1995). He was a member of the Bears squad that won Super Bowl XX in 1985. He was also a member of the ?Shuffling Crew? in the video The Super Bowl Shuffle. Gayle attended Ohio State University.

Gayle owns the distinction of returning the shortest punt for a touchdown in NFL history, when he returned a punt five yards for a touchdown against the New York Giants in the Bears 1985 divisional playoff victory. He is now appearing at the Chicago Bears Fan Convention. He currently works as a guest NFL analyst for Sky Sports in the United Kingdom.

Gayle was in a relationship with Rhoni Reuter, originally of Potosi, Wisconsin. On October 4, 2007, Reuter - who was approximately seven months pregnant with Gayle?s child - was shot and killed at home, along with her unborn daughter.

On March 3, 2009, a Chicago woman, Marni Yang, 41, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of Rhoni Reuter at Reuter?s Deerfield condominium on Oct. 4, 2007. It is alleged that Yang was wearing a disguise when she shot and killed Reuter in a jealous rage.

The Deerfield police previously stated that they did not consider Gayle to be a suspect in the murder. They had sought a male teenager who was seen running from the area. Gayle had in the past complained that a former girlfriend of his had harassed Reuter and others, and had sought a restraining order against this woman. On October 4, before hearing of Reuter?s death Gayle?s attorney had filed a new complaint against this woman, claiming that the woman had violated the order.

Not to be forgotten

Shaun Gayle (at OSU 1980 to '83)

Few could have anticipated a long NFL tenure based on Gayle's four-season college career in which he was routinely targeted by opposing QBs. But Gayle found a home with the Bears when he moved from cornerback to safety and finished with 16 interceptions in 160 games (144 with Chicago) and made the Pro Bowl in 1991.

Jury convicts woman of murder, caused by jealousy over Shaun Gayle
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 16, 2011

A woman whom ex-Bears safety Shaun Gayle admitted to sleeping with has been convicted of murdering Gayle?s pregnant girlfriend, apparently spurred by a desire to have Gayle for herself.

A suburban Chicago jury found Marni Yang guilty of first-degree murder and intentional homicide of an unborn child in the shooting of Rhoni Reuter.

Prosecutors said Yang spent months planning the murder as an attempt to get Gayle from Reuter. Yang?s attorneys claimed Gayle was involved with many women and that Yang accepted that.

After the verdict was read, Gayle told reporters he thought justice had been served.

?I?ll always have regrets,? Gayle said. ?That?s going to be something I live with and I knew that the moment the task force identified who had done this.?
