DB Malcolm Jenkins (All B1G, All-American, Thorpe Award, All-Pro, 2x Super Bowl Champion)

New Orleans Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins invests in Premier League's Burnley

Three-time Pro Bowl safety Malcolm Jenkins spent his bye week building his portfolio.

Jenkins, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles, became a minority investor in the Premier League's Burnley Football Club this week after touring historic Turf Moor stadium in England and watching the Clarets play Manchester City on Saturday.

"Burnley Football Club has a long history of being a blue-collar, tough, well-run organization, and it has a great manager and a new leadership," Jenkins said on the AP Pro Football Podcast. "And [Burnley chairman] Alan Pace is coming in and ALK Capital, and they are really conscious about not only just what's happening on the pitch, but also what's happening in society. Their team captains have been very vocal, their players taking a knee before every match, and they've made it a point to be inclusive.

"And to have the opportunity to join a club with that kind of history, that kind of pedigree, was something that was exciting for me and my team."

"I think that's important for us not only as athletes but role models to show those examples that you don't have to just be on the field in order to engage in sports, that we can have a stake in ownership and what we're doing."

Jenkins is helping young people learn how to invest through his foundation. This year, his foundation has adopted high schools in Philadelphia and Newark, New Jersey, providing them with savings accounts that contain $40 to start and a financial literacy app that provides games to learn the basics of investing, debt and stocks, among other resources.

Just sayin

(Yeah) Just sayin': Professional athletes getting into trouble always makes the headlines, you rarely see news articles detailing some of the good community work they do. The above article was about Malcolm Jenkins buying interest in a soccer team, the community work was probably just an "after thought", i.e. it was at the end. He did post it on his foundation's website:

The Malcolm Jenkins Foundation Launches New Initiative Focused on Financial Freedom to Help Close the Racial Wealth Gap
Philadelphia, PA — April 16, 2021 — 2x Super Bowl Champion and 3x Pro-Bowl New Orleans Saints Safety Malcolm Jenkins and The Malcolm Jenkins Foundation (TMJF) announced today it will open 1,000 savings accounts for students in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio and Louisiana as part of its longer-term commitment to help eliminate the racial wealth gap that perpetuates in America.

Since 2012, The Foundation has worked in under-resourced communities to increase graduation rates, as well as college eligibility and enrollment through its Project REWARDS program in partnership with College Track. TMJF annually rewards students in pursuit of higher learning with The Malcolm Jenkins Scholars. More than $150,000 in scholarships have been awarded to date, providing these scholars with financial assistance for costly expenses to attend colleges and universities such as books, supplies and other fees. In addition to the grants, TMJF has funded out-of-state college tours, career exposure events, job networking workshops and support college freshmen with final exam study baskets.

One of my memories of Malcolm is from the game at Wiscy in 2008. After the third quarter, I was watching him on the sideline, where he was very absorbed in the ‘Jump Around’, hopping around and having a good time watching the fans. Being nervous about the game, I actually wondered if he was so into it that he might have lost some focus, which was a 10-10 tie at the time. Of course, with a little under a minute to go, Malcolm picked off a pass to seal the 20-17 Buckeye win.

One of my favorite Buckeyes ever, and always a class act on and off the field.
