Two Tigers grab OVC weekly honors
Submitted by TSU ? October 5, 2008
Tennessee State senior running back Javarris Williams and sophomore safety Eugene Clifford have been named for Ohio Valley Conference honors for their performances in the Tigers? 30-27 win at UT Martin on Saturday.
Eugene Clifford, a 6-2, 195, native of Cincinnati, Ohio was named the OVC defensive player of the week.
Clifford, a transfer from Ohio State, led all tacklers in TSU?s 30-27 OT win, recording 11 tackles (5 solo), 1 TFL (3) and 1 Fumble recovery. Clifford?s fumble recovery on the UTM 48 yd line in the first quarter (3:02) led to TSU?s first score to tie the score at 7-7 (1:21).
TSU defensive tackle Maurice Davis and defensive backs Larry Williford and sophomore Eugene Clifford, a transfer from Ohio State, also made second team.
Clifford appreciates being depended upon to do more than cover receivers. It reminds him of his high school days in Cincinnati.
"I always played up close in high school ? that's where I learned to tackle,'' he said. "When I was at Ohio State I didn't get to tackle much because I played cornerback and dropped back in coverage almost every play."
Clifford, Holmes, Wilkinson Join Buck Buchanan Award Watch List
PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The early season play of linebackers Tyler Holmes of Massachusetts and Antoine Wilkinson of Missouri State as well as safety Eugene Clifford of Tennessee State has led to their joining the race for the 2010 Buck Buchanan Award, sponsored by Fathead.com.
The stellar 20-player Watch List will be pared to the winner of the Football Championship Subdivision's top individual honor for defensive players. The Buchanan Award is in its 16th season and will be presented at the national awards banquet on Thursday, Jan. 6 in Frisco, Texas ? the night before the national championship game.
Clifford, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior, has been a disruptive force in coverage this season. Through his first five games, he has intercepted three passes and broken up six more for nine passes defended. The 2008 transfer from Ohio State also leads Tennessee State with 39 tackles.
TSU's Eugene Clifford named All-American
By Mike Organ ? THE TENNESSEAN ? December 15, 2010
Ohio State Coach Jim Tressel told Tennessee State Coach Rod Reed to expect great things from Eugene Clifford, a safety Tressel had dismissed in 2008.
Clifford transferred to TSU where he was a three-year starter and Wednesday was selected to the Associated Press Football Championship Series All-America team.
?After we got Eugene I ran into (Jim) Tressel at the coaches convention,? said Reed, who was TSU?s defensive coordinator at the time. ?I introduced myself and he said, ?Coach I tell you what, you?ve got a great one on your hands.? As soon as Clifford got on the field you could see it. He has that ability explode plays, he?s a good tackler in the open field, and he played well in our system.?
On Tuesday Clifford was named to the Walter Camp Foundation FCS All-America team.
Clifford was selected to play in the Russell Athletic HBCU All-Star Bowl Saturday at the Georgia Dome. He has spent the week in Atlanta practicing.
Clifford played in four games as a freshman at Ohio State in 2007 but was suspended from the traveling team to the BCS national championship game for violating unspecified team rules.
He was kicked off the team before the 2008 season after being charged with assault after an altercation at a bar.
?Getting away from home and Ohio State helped me a lot because I got away from some people who had a negative influence on me,? said Clifford, who is from Cincinnati. ?I came to TSU, played with a great bunch of guys and was able to become the player everyone expected me to be coming out of high school.?
This season Clifford led TSU in tackles (83) and interceptions (4) and led the OVC in passes defended (14). He finished his TSU career with 204 tackles and nine interceptions.
