FriDAY'S BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP
Dunbar boys slam Talawanda

By the Dayton Daily News

Dunbar opened the Division II boys high school basketball sectional tournament at Springboro Friday night by slam-dunking Oxford Talawanda into submission, 101-43.

The Wolverines' 6-8 Mark Anderson got the sold-out crowd howling less that two minutes into the game with a baseline tomahawk dunk over two 6-foot-6 Talawanda players.

That started a surge that put Dunbar on a 14-0 run and a 31-10 first-quarter lead. Dunbar had 11 crowd-pleasing dunks as it improved to 19-2.

Daequan Cook had 26 points, 6-9 Aaron Pogue 19 points and eight rebounds and Anderson 13 points, five rebounds, five assists and five blocked shots. All played only three quarters.

Dunbar plays Hamilton Badin in the second round on Wednesday.

Top seeds missing players

By Mark Gokavi
Dayton Daily News

Fairmont's and Dunbar's boys basketball teams earned top seeds in the area tournaments for Division I and II, respectively. But you likely won't see some who were starters for much of the season.

Ben Eldred, a starter and second-leading scorer for the Firebirds, has not been in uniform the past several games. Fairmont coach Hank Bias said it's unlikely Eldred, a junior, will play again.

Senior Antoine Sain, a starter for Dunbar in last season's state semifinals, was not on the roster printed for the Scholastic Play-By-Play Classic in Cincinnati.

Dunbar overwhelms stall tactics of Badin

By the Dayton Daily News

Dunbar used the 3-point shot to spoil Hamilton Badin's hold-the-ball game plan Wednesday night in the Division II boys high school basketball sectional at Springboro.

The Wolverines won, 72-36, to improve their record to 20-2 before a packed house. Next up is the sectional final Friday night against Alter at 6 p.m.

Badin's stall tactics worked early in the game when it was 3-3 with under three minutes to play in the first quarter.

Dunbar's only points came on a basket and free throw from Mark Anderson. Badin made three-of-four free throws.

Norris Cole finally got the Wolves moving with back-to-back treys to make it 9-3. Daequan Cook hit a free throw and then bottomed out a three at the buzzer to make it 13-3 at the end of the quarter.

Cole added another trey a minute into the second quarter for a 16-5 game and the route was on.

Anderson, a 6-8 senior, took over in the third quarter, scoring 14 of his game-high 19 points, including a pair of slam dunks. Cole added 13 while Cook had 10, including a slam in the third quarter when he took the ball off the glass and jammed it, bringing down the house.

Dunbar takes out feisty Alter

Knights escape early hole, but Cook puts it away in final minutes

By Sean McClelland
Dayton Daily News

SPRINGBORO | You didn't expect Joe Petrocelli's team to fade meekly into the night, did you?

Alter High School rejected that offer Friday night despite trailing Dunbar, 30-11, midway through the second quarter of a Division II boys sectional final.

Call it a healthy scare for the favored Wolverines, who led by three early in the fourth quarter before heroics from McDonald's All-American Daequan Cook secured a district berth, 61-52.

"It was my time to take over," the Ohio State-bound Cook said after scoring 10 of his game-high 28 points in the opening minutes of the final period, shoving the lead back to 15.

"Daequan is just in another dimension," observed Petrocelli, whose team finished 12-10.

Midway through the first quarter, with Springboro High's 2,700-seat gym already swollen to capacity, the public-address announcer advised fans to "please squeeze together close."

Dunbar (21-2) was in the midst of a 17-0 run and threatening to end the suspense early. But it was 44-38 going to the fourth, and then Alter's 6-foot-8 senior center Danny Bruner (19 points) nailed a 3-pointer.

Cook, who earlier had been content to set up teammates such as Aaron Pogue (16 points) and Mark Anderson, took this as his cue to reach for his cape.

"Just put us on his back and carried us," Dunbar coach Peter Pullen marveled.

There was little celebrating in the winning locker room. Dunbar's focus remains on returning to state and winning it. That quest continues March 8 in UD Arena against Bellefontaine.

Hey Bn 44820 any idea on Bellfointaine.

If not who do you think is going to be Dunbar's greatest test to get back to state.

Bellfontaine is a good team at 16-7, but Dunbar is much more athletic and they will not have an answer for Cook or Pogue in my opinion. As far as some challengers in Division II.....

Willard is a very good team out of the NOL, they will be tough to beat. Akron SVSM has only lost one game, I believe they are ranked #1 in Division II. Also, Greenfield McClain with Dante Jackson are a very good team who play defense, should be interesting.

If Cook can get hot, he can carry them all the way to the Final Four.

Ok thanks.

Does SVSM still have that Johnson kid or did he graduate.

Marcus Johnson is a senior at ASVSM. Dunbar is a heavy favorite to win it in D2 IMO. Willard is also a possible contender with ASVSM.

Thanks Smitty, I remember him from last year when they played Lima Senior and he dominated for 3 quarters and then Travis Walton just completely shut him down.

I think if the match up happens, it shoudl be fun to watch, even know Cook should dominate him some.

Cook puts on a show, Dunbar wins district

By Dave Long
Dayton Daily News

DAYTON | Pick the best play of the night.

That was the toughest assignment for most of the estimated 5,000 who watched Dunbar's boys basketball team defeat Bellefontaine, 79-36, at UD Arena on Wednesday night.

The win gives the 22-2 Wolverines a Division II district championship. Their next opponent is Cincinnati Woodward in the D-II regional at Wright State next Thursday.

A 22-1 second-quarter run by Dunbar took care of any question of who the winner would be. But to most in the crowd, the outcome was expected.

They came to see a little showtime from Dunbar stars Daequan Cook, Mark Anderson and Aaron Pogue.

Cook, the 6-foot-5 McDonald's All-American headed to Ohio State, didn't disappoint. Among his 24 points were:

• A 3-point shot from well beyond NBA range with 1.2 seconds left in the half that was all net.

• A slam dunk with 5:24 to go in the third quarter. Darran Powell put the ball off the glass, and the trailing Cook picked it out of the air and drained it.

• A slam dunk off a backdoor cut where Powell put the pass high in the air.

"My favorite was the slam off the backdoor," Cook said. "I had the defender under me. So I had to time it to get over him, find the ball in the air and not miss the dunk."

No one would dispute his judgment.

Anderson followed Cook with 16 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots, while Pogue had 14 points and 15 rebounds. Sean Egler had 10 for Bellefontaine (16-8).

After 'nerve-wracking' delay, Dunbar gets busy winning

Cook scores 29 points in 68-55 Wolverines victory

By Mark Gokavi
Dayton Daily News

FAIRBORN | Waiting an extra hour to play, Dunbar was like a wind-up toy finally set free. The Wolverines didn't take off right away, but when they did, they sped right into the Division II regional boys basketball final.

An 18-0 run put Dunbar (23-2) in firm command against Cincinnati Woodward at the Nutter Center Thursday night. The 68-55 victory sets up an 11 a.m. Saturday regional final against New Albany (20-4).

The teams waited for New Albany's four-overtime, 56-53 victory over Tippecanoe before they took the court.

"It was nerve-wracking," said Daequan Cook, who scored a game-high 29 points. "I was so ready to play and get it over with."

Woodward led early before Dunbar got revved up. "We didn't come out focused," Cook said. "That was the main thing. They came out with a lot more intensity than we did." The 18-0 run wasn't just an offensive production. Woodward didn't score for nearly seven minutes.

"We played some defense," Dunbar coach Peter Pullen said. "(Woodward's Troy) Long got off to a good start. We put Daequan on him."

It's a good thing Dunbar built a 21-point second-half lead because Long rallied the Bulldogs within 51-47 with 6:01 left. The sophomore shooter scored 28 points and was supported by Chris Grimes' 15 points and 13 rebounds.

"We had a little mental lapse," Cook said. "After a while we stepped it up."

A 17-8 game-ending run led by Cook, Aaron Pogue (18 points) and Darran Powell (11 points) settled things. Seven different players scored for Dunbar, which played more guys because of a short turnaround before Saturday's game.

"They got us out of running our offense," Woodward coach Lannis Timmons said. "They did a real good job of denying us on the wing."

The win puts Dunbar one step from a return trip to the state tournament. Last year, the Wolverines lost 95-90 to eventual champion Upper Sandusky.
