Day of Upsets (will the Gators be Next?)

sandgk

Watson, Crick & A Twist
Man what a huge day of upsets on the round ball court.

Wisconsin got blown up by North Dakota (not kidding) they are in the 3rd year of a 5 year reclassification from D-II to D-I.

Previously unbeaten Pittsburgh went down in the Garden to unranked St. Johns.

Top ranked Duke got upended by unranked Georgetown.

Only Florida remains among the ranks of the unbeaten as we speak, though they get to play the Vols tonight. (at time of writing they have a 19-17 advantage early in play). Some have it that with the relative weakness of the teams in the SEC (versus say the Big East or ACC) that Florida's best chance of being undone may only happen once they get to the NCAA.

Florida lost, too?!? Wow, and on a day that I watch no TV. Maybe I should never watch basketball -- that way all the teams would lose except OSU.

As this season goes on should we have Manfred hold you to that?

BTW - Liked the old Avatar. (Just because the detail on your new one where Lucy pulls the ball away is too hard to see with these old eyes :wink2:)

GEORGETOWN 87 | NO. 1 DUKE 84

Georgetown mars Duke’s record

Sunday, January 22, 2006

FROM WIRE REPORTS

</IMG> GERALD HERBERT | ASSOCIATED PRESS Georgetown’s Darrel Owens raises his arms in celebration with teammates Jonathan Wallace, left, and Brandon Bowman, right, after the Hoyas held off Duke’s rally.

WASHINGTON — John Thompson III got an embrace from his Hall of Fame father as the fans stormed the court, madly celebrating the first Georgetown victory over a No. 1 team in 21 years.
"That’s my child," the elder Thompson said. "I love my child. After all he’s had to go through, he deserves this."
The Hoyas finally have a signature victory in the new Thompson era, a 87-84 stunner over top-ranked Duke yesterday after they withstood a furious rally that ended when a jubilant Brandon Bowman jumped on a loose ball at the buzzer.
The Blue Devils, who entered the game 17-0, joined No. 2 Florida and No. 9 Pittsburgh as the last undefeated teams in Division I to suffer their first losses yesterday. Tennessee took down the 17-0 Gators 80-76 and St. John’s won 55-50 over the Panthers, who entered 15-0.
Georgetown (12-4) spread the floor with its Princeton-based motion offense, handling the ball skillfully against the Blue Devils’ pressure. The Hoyas burned Duke with back-door plays, assisting 24 times on 32 field goals and shooting 61.5 percent from the field.
"We felt if we could keep it spread, pass and cut, we would get layups," said Thompson III, in his second year coaching the team his father directed to the 1984 NCAA title. "And we did."
Bowman scored 23 points and Jeff Green had 18 for Georgetown.
The Blue Devils had matched their best start ever, but even J.J. Redick’s career-high-tying 41 points couldn’t get them their first 18-0 start.
"We’ve been in the penthouse all season, having room service," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "Somebody jammed up the elevator today. We were not worthy of our Duke jerseys in the first half."
Georgetown’s 19-5 run that included five layups gave the Hoyas a 42-28 halftime lead after shooting 67 percent from the field.
Behind Redick, who made six three-pointers and drove to the basket for three three-point plays, Duke methodically cut the into the deficit in the second half, pulling to two behind on Shelden Williams’ layup with 4:03 remaining. Poor Hoyas free throw shooting — 7 of 12 in the final 1:46 — gave Duke a chance to tie on its final possession. Instead of getting the ball to Redick, however, freshman point guard Greg Paulus was dribbling near midcourt and got stripped by Wallace with four seconds left.

TENNESSEE 80 | NO. 2 FLORIDA 76

Vols knock off Gators as last of unbeatens falls

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Florida took the court against Tennessee last night as the last undefeated team in the country, knowing two others had gone down earlier in the day.
But the Gators couldn’t avoid making it 0-3 for the unbeatens.
Tennessee put an end to the surprising Florida’s best start in school history with an 80-76 Southeastern Conference victory, behind 29 points by Chris Lofton.
Florida (17-1, 3-1), No. 1 Duke and No. 9 Pittsburgh all began the day with perfect records and road games to play. But Duke lost to Georgetown and Pitt fell to St. John’s, making Florida the lone unbeaten at tip-off.
"We had won 17 games, but going into tonight we were 0-0," Florida coach Billy Donovan said. "I knew Duke had lost, but these are different guys. They are more wrapped up in trying to become a good team, to become better individually and really sacrifice for one another."
Florida wasn’t ranked in the preseason poll and wasn’t even considered among the best teams in the SEC after losing Matt Walsh, Anthony Roberson and David Lee from a team that went 24-8 last season.
But the Volunteers (12-3, 3-1) also are having a surprisingly good year under new coach Bruce Pearl, despite losing two straight coming into last night.
The Vols seemed more inspired by the possibility of keeping Florida away from No. 1 as the Gators were to be the top-ranked team in the country.
"If you asked me, I would have thought that would have been a motivator for Florida to wake up tomorrow as the No. 1 team in the country," Pearl said.
The final 9½ minutes were tight and got tighter as the clock wound down.
Corey Brewer, who scored 20 points, had tied it at 76 for Florida with 45 seconds remaining on two foul shots.
Lofton missed a three at the other end for Tennessee, and Brewer got the outlet pass and was racing for the basket when Lofton stole it.
Dane Bradshaw caught a long pass from Lofton and scored a layup that put the Vols ahead 78-76 with 20 seconds left. Florida’s Lee Humphrey then missed a three with six seconds left, and Lofton was fouled. He sank both foul shots to seal it.

I know everyone realizes that there are a lot of games to be played before March.

Having said that:

The NCAA tournament usually becomes guard-oriented. I like our chances in that regard, especially due to our perimeter defense. Butler is a huge key. Did people notice that Wisconsin made their big run in the first quarter when Butler sat down?

In a previous post, I talked about our shooting. In it, I mentioned a few games ago that (at times) this team reminds me of the Pitino-Kentucky teams. When the threes were falling, they looked like world-beaters. However, if they ran into a cold night, they were vulnerable. That's why I'm enjoying the recent addition of an interior player (usually Dials) posting high and allowing a guard (usually Butler) to peel around and either: drive to the hoop or dump (ala the old pick-and-roll) to the post player. If Butler hits that layup near the end of regulation against Michigan State ...

Finally, who out there are old (like me) and had visions of Jay Burson going down vs. Iowa his senior year when Dials went down with an ankle in the first half Saturday?

i didnt see the duke loss as that massive of an upset and im glad they lost finally. they are a good team but they sure dont seem #1 to me. they should have 3 losses after their lovefest of luck against va tech and an indiana game which barring the first 5 minutes indiana raped them and killingsworth made williams look like he had never played before. right now id put uconn at #1 but even they need some work yet so i wouldnt be too worried if it was somebody else. just as long as it isnt duke or florida. im liking our chances in the tourney to make a very solid run.
