Darrell Hazell (official thread)

Coaching Changes

So many coaching changes that could have an impact on our staff. Akron, Youngstown State, Louisville, Marshall, Virginia, and likely Notre Dame are going to be changing coaches. All those schools have some connection to Ohio. Akron and Youngstown State are likely to find the cachet of a Buckeye assistant as their head coach appealing. The name recognition could go a long way with recruits. Louisville, Marshall are always looking for talent in Ohio. Virginia hit Ohio hard once Al Groh came to the program. Notre Dame has breeched the fence in Ohio by setting up camp in Cincinnati. Any of the these programs could do themselves a favor by adding a head coach, or an assistant coach, from the Ohio State program. It brings them a connection to the most fertile recruiting grounds north of the Carolinas and east of the Rockies. Coaches who know and are known by the coaches of the top programs in the state.

....

The other very appealing target is going to be Darrell Hazel. He is an attractive black assistant who is going to interview well. You can bet the NCAA was on the phone to each of these schools immediately after learning of the dismissal of the head coach, encouraging them to look to hire black coaches. It is a very sensitive issue with the NCAA that black coaches have become old hat in the NFL while the NCAA schools have less than a handful.

....

Hazel is the one that throws a wrench in things here. I think Hazel as OC is as good a bet as there is out there. What happens if he is offered a head coaching job at a YSU or even an Akron? JT may have to go outside his circle to get an OC. For a good chunk of the people who visit here, that is an early Christmas present. I have argued that Hazel is a new voice and that is a good thing. Maybe the best we can hope for. I never envisioned the possibility that Hazel might be getting an offer he can't refuse.

Virginia hit Ohio hard once Al Groh came to the program.

Virginia needs to start hitting the commonwealth of VIRGINIA better...A lot of talent there, especially in the tidewater area, goes to the rest of the ACC. They have the same problem as No D in recruiting though, due to high academic standards.

Darrell Hazel is one of the rising stars in the coaching ranks and I am happy I can confidently say he deserves it. He is extremely smart and thinks very critically. He is a very talented coach who will only make the move when it feels right to him. He has turned down offers to coach in the NFL and he wouldn't go anywhere unless it was the right time. The fact that he is still at Ohio State is purely a thing where OSU is great place to be and that Coach Hazel is waiting for the perfect job to appear

His skin color does certainly add to the appeal for a school to hire him, that is the world we live in now, but he would be an excellent hire no matter his race.

We ran into the same problem with Mel Tucker a few years back. When you have talented young coaches that can teach and recruit, schools are going to come calling. In Mel's case he jumped to the NFL, but in this case I don't see Coach Hazell leaving for the NFL or another program for a little while. He was named an Assistant Head Coach a couple of years back because the plan is to make him the OC at some point, possibly next year if Bollman goes. I don't see him leaving until he has been in that position for awhile.

This was the same path that Tressel laid out with Tucker. Unfortunately, he went to the Browns and Marshall hired Snyder shortly thereafter. Tressel offered Tucker the DC job but he did not want to pass on the opportunity to coach in the NFL. That would be a helluva tandem of coaches if he was still here.

WVU offensive coordinator Mullen a candidate at Kent State
Wednesday, December 08, 2010
Colin Dunlap, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

West Virginia offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen is a strong candidate for the head football coaching job at Kent State, according to two sources.

Mullen has yet to have a formal interview, but one is expected to be scheduled in the near future, as soon as in the next day or two, the sources said.

The sources also confirmed that Ohio State assistant head coach and wide receivers coach Darrell Hazell is a candidate for the Kent State job, which became vacant when Doug Martin resigned in November after going 29-53 in seven seasons.
