When the children emerged into daylight, 18-year-old Stefan made a squeaking noise and covered his face with his hands. Later, he made gurgling noises when he saw a cow.
"When the media write that the children speak, this is just half-true," said Austrian Police Chief Leopold Etz. "Among each other, they communicate with noises that are a mixture of growling and cooing. If they want to say something so others understand them as well, they have to focus and really concentrate, which seems to be extremely exhausting for them."
Not only is their language impaired, but all three children have defective immune systems and looked "terrified and terribly pale," according to police.
Kerstin, who is still hospitalized with kidney failure, has lost most of her teeth due to vitamin deficiency. Doctors are evaluating Stefan for hearing and sight damage. The entire family shows stooped posture due to the low ceilings in their underground enclosure. Felix, 5, crawls, rather than walks. He also sings to himself and startles easily.

If only he had been born in the USA, where with a higher degree of organized religion than Austria, this problem would have been prevented.

Prior convictions for rape! Sex Offender records destroyed after 10 years by Austrian law! What a cock-up!

Police files revealing that Josef Fritzl had previous convictions and charges for rape emerged today as his victims came forward to testify about their ordeals.
Officials in Linz, Upper Austria, found files from 1967 showing that Fritzl was a known sex offender. His record contains a conviction for a rape and an attempt rape as well as an arrest for public exposure.

Fritzl served only 18 months for the rape, allegedly because a judge considered he should be reunited with his wife and four children.
The files also show that he attempted to rape a 21-year-old in the same year, but the victim was able to escape.

Amstetten police and prosecutors had claimed that Fritzl had no criminal record. Even if he had been convicted, they said, Austrian law demanded that all records on sex offences are destroyed after ten years.

Note to US rapists, don't try that defense here, it doesn't work. "Oh, don't put me away for raping a woman, I have a wife and kids!" :roll:

well that makes perfect sense. lets let the sex offender out of jail early so he can spend more time with his kids. in fact, they really should have put him under house arrest. that would've shown him! although i still think that would have been letting him off too easy. i mean, the guy did attempt to rape several women, at least 1 successfully. at a minimum i would think "some" public service would be in order. in a day care perhaps.

How to avoid large, and suspect, power bills if you wish to imprison your family. FYI

Josef Fritzl?s lodgers revealed today that he was stealing food from them to feed his captive family.

They said Fritzl would enter the flats he was renting on the ground floor of his three-storey house when the lodgers were away and steal food from their refrigerators


They also accused Fritzl of connecting the power supply of the dungeon to their meters, so they would be forced to pay large electricity bills.

Sepp Leitner, one of 100 lodgers who rented rooms in Fritzl's house during the years his family were imprisoned in the cellar, said paid ?exorbitant? electricity bills despite the fact that he was never at home. After an electrician could not determine why the bills were so high. When Mr Leitner refused to pay them Fritzl threw him out.

This is all hind sight is 20/20 statement of course. At the time they couldn't figure out or couldn't prove the thefts or the electrical issue. Supposedly, for any little reason at all, Fritzl would just evict his tenants.

thats smart actually. the longer a tennant lives in a building, the more likely they are to start asking questions and looking behind doors you don't want them too. as odd as it might sound, the more traffic in and out the fewer questions will be asked.

Never in modern Europe has there been a case of such sustained sensory deprivation. None of the cellar children were told they were prisoners; Elisabeth presented their cellar existence as normal life.
