The Columbus Dispatch : OSU makeover for ugly duckling
Ohio State University's Cunz Hall reflects a mid-'60s building style known among architects as Brutalist.

Many passers-by simply call the building's design "brutal."
But a $24 million renovation plan will thrust the squat, wafflelike structure into the 21st century within two years, when Cunz Hall becomes the new home of OSU's College of Public Health.
OSU has engaged Jonathan Barnes Architecture & Design of Columbus to update Cunz Hall in the hopes of cementing the college's fast-rising reputation. Five years ago, the college was a school within OSU's College of Medicine. But it later split off and, in 2007, the university upgraded it to college status.
That paved the way for accreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health and put it on even footing with most other academic disciplines at the university. It's the only accredited public-health college in Ohio.
The college has nearly 100 faculty and staff members and said it is drawing increasing interest from students as a focus on environmental health, food safety and cancer prevention rises among health practitioners. But its working environment is becoming obsolete.
