BOONE COUNTY, Ky. — A new museum being built in Kentucky will have some of the classic staples of natural history museums — dinosaurs, fossils and a mineral collection. But it will also have something most museums don't: a viewpoint based solely on the Bible.

"We wanted to present an alternative, a scientific alternative to the natural history museums, which present evolution as fact," explained Mark Looy, spokesman for Answers in Genesis (search), the Australia-based group building the Creation Museum (search).

Challenging a widely held belief of modern scientists, the museum founders aim to counter the notion that man evolved from apes.

"We believe that dinosaurs were created alongside of man on day six of creation," said Looy. "They did not die out 65 million years ago."

Critics such as the Rev. Mendle Adams, pastor of St. Peter's United Church of Christ (search) in nearby Cincinnati, say museum leaders are twisting Bible verses to support an agenda.

"It's silly. It's a silly, silly argument," said Adams. "They use what I consider to be a flawed analysis of Scripture."

But the Creation Museum is getting a great deal of support. Millions of dollars in donations have come in from around the world.

The money's been used to build a theater, a planetarium and a nature trail on 50 acres of land, all focused on teaching the Bible in some way.

Half a million visitors a year are expected. That worries many scientists, who say the museum will attempt to undo a person's scientific education.

"They're pretty much saying that scientists around the world have colluded to pretty much lie to people," said Dr. William Anyonge, a paleontologist and assistant professor of biology at Xavier University (search) in Cincinnati. "I think that is really a slander to science."

Looy counters that the museum's message is well supported.

"Yes, the content will be very different from what you'll hear presented from mainstream scientists," he said, "but it's still good science nonetheless."

The museum plans to open in the spring of 2007.

There's a good chance that I'll be getting sent to Kentucky because of work obligations. If so I'll be certain to check this place out. It should be quite interesting. A 50 acre museum should really be impressive.

First, this is a very old story. I've known of this project for the last two years. I guess even old news has to receive an unoriginal and inane attack by Tiboring as well.

Second, interesting how the article had to find another "Christian" to criticize the project. Of course they went to the United Church of Christ, a movement much more tied to modern humanism than Christianity (For example, in the last week, the Church of Christ okayed gay marriage. Go to http://news.ucc.org/ if you want to see the other positions this church took last week during its national synod and you will get a flavor for how outside of mainstream Christianity they are).

Third, Dr. Anyonge needs to do more research on the Answers in Genesis group before he attacks them with charges like "saying that scientists around the world have colluded to pretty much lie to people." This is not what the group teaches. Instead they try to demonstrate how different world views and basic assumptions about man's origins leads to different conclusions of the same evidence by scientists and theologians. The group has been critical of how the scientific community refuses to allow debate on the issue, but that is a different story than what the professor charges.

Fourth, as the building of the museum has come from private sources, what does it matter what it teaches? Why ridicule the beliefs of someone else because they disagree with yours? Oh, that's right. They're Christian so it is okay.

Fifth, thanks once again Tibor for showing how intolerant you truly are of other people's beliefs that differ from yours. I love how you constantly point at other people's "closemindedness" while constantly displaying your own.

Typical stupidity from the most hypocritical christian dolt on the board.

Don't worry, I'm sure they're too stupid to adapt so they will die out naturally. :roll2:

Actually, it was a well reasoned and intelligent post. Yours was mind-numbingly stupid. You never fail to amuse, but please do try to make an effort.... this one was rather poor.

Is that all you have? Is that it? What a sad person you have become. You have become a shell of the old Tibor you once were. Nothing new to say. Nothing original. Nothing thoughtfull. Nothing pithy. Nothing even close to being provoking or intelligent. I feel sorry for you. Nasty sarcasm was the one thing you had in life and now you don't even have that. Sad......I will keep you in my prayers.

I'm basing my judgement on your actions, not your words.

I also didn't realize you were the sole judge of what deserves and doesn't deserve to be laughed at. Once you show me you credentials I will be glad to revoke my charge that you are intolerant.

I come here to neither defend buckeyegrad, nor rip on him ..
but given the doctorb's evident interest in "alternative" ahem scientific theses

We ought to chip in and buy Tibor one of these ..

Its only a $150 for one year or $1,000 for a lifetime membership ...

I believe the certificate would make a great addition to his wall of fame in Da Burg.

All kidding aside, I can't take this type of revisionist theorizing that goes under the the banner of creationism with any seriousness whatsoever. These folks are most welcome to their delusions/beliefs. As long as they keep them out of the classrooms of America.
I have no problem whatsoever with faith in an educational environment, and made sure my son, like myself, was exposed to that while growing up. But faith isn't science. Both are demanding philosophies, though with divergent processes.
With faith its all about accepting the unprovable.
Whereas, with proof that stands up to peer review -- that's the acid test of science.
You think T. Rex roamed the desert 6,000 years ago and that was day 6 acording to Genesis -- prove it, show your proof to other scientists and allow them to reproduce your findings. And, if they disprove your claims, consider humbly that well, you were plain wrong.
Of course nothing the creationists state that places origins at a pronouncedly earlier time passes such a simple test. Sadly, instead of accepting the failure of their reports to pass muster when tested, they all too often complain about the scientific community -- donning the garb of the persecuted. Tested yes, and found wanting; persecuted - no.
Religion and science probably only ever mixed well once in our history as a people -- back in the days of the original arabian mathematicians and astronomers. Since then its been a volatile and politically deadly mix. Just consider Galileo's fate, now there is a real instance of someone (a man of faith and science) who was persecuted, and threatened. And all by the church, for telling the world the truth of what he saw on a starry night.

How is something dumb and insipid as a "Creation Museum" supposed to inspire an intelligent discussion? :roll1:

Go back to wishing for my death and washing your wife's smelly feet.

I'll agree that the old Tibor was much better at pithing people off.

Open-topic moderated forum. Any topic (within reason) is appropriate here as long as they can be discussed with at least a degree of tact, civility, and respect for differing opinions.
So basically you intentionally put something on an internet message board with the above description that you thought would be unable to inspire intelligent discussion?

I would submit that it is in fact you who are unable to participate in an intelligent discussion. You have single-handedly lowered my opinion of the entire medical profession as one clearly need not be very smart to become a doctor.

Awaiting an intelligent reply (but not holding my breath),
