For all of you health-experts out there, I'd like to know what you guys think about Creatine. I didn't find any other threads about this, and the I thought that it was a big enough topic to seperate from the other protein shakes thread.

I know it has side effects, and a lot of it is unknown, but i've been doing some research and have been considering trying it. I've heard that if you mix it with protein powder (You can buy Crea-Whey, which is a mix of Creatine and Whey Protein), it doesn't hurt you as much, and when you get off it there isn't as much as a drop in your body weight and strength.

I know if you use it right and safely, the effects can be great. That's why I'm asking you guys, because if I do try it, I want to do it right.

Well.. depends what your expectations are... so... what are your expectations?

My brother used to use creatine and had to have half of his thyroid removed. The doctors thought that maybe his use of it COULD have been a factor but you can't be positive.

When I was lifting regularly I used creatine and I had a lot of success with it and no known side effects. My strength went up super quickly and it seemed like my muscles repaired themselves at twice the rate as they did without creatine. I haven't noticed a whole lot of drop off in my strength since I've been off of it (I haven't worked out regularly in about 8 years), don't get me wrong, I'm not as strong as I was then, but there isn't a signigicant difference. The big factor now is my body mass is a lot more jiggly now.

I have used it before when I lifted all the time. A few things -

- It does work. It works essentially by forcing water into muscle cells. (Think of them as water balloons). At the time I used it, prob the best legal growth supplement available.

- It does have side effects. Because of the water effect above, plan on drinking A LOT of water. If you dont, you'll wake up in the middle of the night w some serious cramps. I did.

- I noticed that if I took too much at once, it gave me a slight headache.

Dont know about any proven long term effects, but its been out for a while now and I havent heard of anything.

Well I want to increase my bench press (max) by atleast 35-50 pounds, and increase my body weight by around 15 pounds. I am 5'9", and weigh 165 pounds, and would like to be 180 by football season (August).

Also to increase my muscle mass and muscle definition by spring break (early april) would be nice.

That shouldn't be a problem, because I drink usually 4 bottles of water (16.9 ounces each) a day, if not more. Using Creatine would definitely encourage me to drink more, if nessacary.

The biggest factor is finding what works for YOU. Creatine helped me achieve my goals, which were to bulk up, add muscle mass, and increase strength. I was never ripped or toned. I was just big and strong... not Mili big and strong though.

SB31, how old are you? I'm thinking your teenage years might not be the best time to play with this type of supplement... but I know very little about it.

I'm 16, but the main reason I am using this is for football, so if I use it at all it would be for the next few years.

Of course, though, another motivation to use it would be to get in better shape, and a better body, anyway.

I took it when I was 14-16. Actually my HS football coach made everyone on the team take it and he created a special weight lifting class for all of the football players. We lifted in the mornings as a team and lifted in the afternoons durring our PE class. My bench press went from 95 pounds to about 200 in about 4 months.

This is sort of accurate...

Now... that's how it does help the appearace of Mass... by naturally stroing more water in your muscles... What's going on is that phosphocreatine (which is carried by fluids) is one of the need substances to contract your muscles... by loading your muscles up, you don't get stronger, per se... but you can work out longer because you're adding the creatine faster then your body would otherwise synthesize it.

So.. that ability to work out longer (Or more intensely), if you use it.. is the advantage... and then, more work = more results.

If you go off of it... then you will lose some of the fluid in your muscles, but hopefully the results from the "more work" over time will have increased your size anyway.

Also, just to be safe, I'd recommend (STRONGLY) only using it 3 out of every 4 weeks... you know to give your body a rest, and there are websites out there that have a lot of information.. I'd check ones that aren't trying to sell you anything... and... you know.. it wouldn't hurt to run it by your Doctor, and maybe talk to your parents...
