Going in to the northwestern game tressel claimed that teams who are a spread passing team haven't been able to do anything against the bucks and that he wasn't worried. Thing is he couldn't be further from the truth. NC State, SD State and Northwestern all had success. The reason for this is because dantonio and now snyder insist on playing that crap soft cover 2 zone which just invites teams to pick them apart on short routes and the hit passes over the linebackers(i.e Iowa game). Danotonio got away with this because we had superior DB's, and more importantly a d-line that could get serious pressure, but there has been a solid drop off in talent and their just not getting it done. I noticed yesterday that when osu Finally went more man to man they started to have success, mainly because the qb is forced to make quicker decisions, but in scouting snyder must not have figured that iowa's qb could run and the defenders had their backs turned. bottom line is that snyder needs to sack up and play man to man and mix it w/ combo coverages and more blitzes or they will get picked apart every game like they have so far, because zone doesn't work when you don't have any semblance of a pass rush. We were so spoiled over the past few years to have an amazing d-line that dantonio could do whatever he wanted and now that doesn;t exist. things need to change before these struggles continue!
 
I agree. There's just too many passes that are completed between the cover 2 that go for 20 yards its just ridiculous. Things don't necessarily need to change all that much but maybe some coaching changes to teach these players would be nice.

Actually Cover 2 keeps the corners in the flats to defend the short routes and give strong run support. The problem has been teams flooding the intermediate zone to keep the corner in space while also running someone down the seam to occupy the safety. tOSU also plays a cover 4 out of the 2 look (they call it cover 8) where everyone has a deep quarter so when you see the underneath routes being given freely, that is what you have.

Cover 2 is not the ideal coverage for any type of spread...

However, we have gotten away with it in the past with a hard, DISCIPLINED pass rush. Anytime the QB can break contain all day or step up in a solid pocket...its trouble.

Our cover 2 is actually cover nobody, as in let receivers get open no matter how many db's we have and hope we limit them to less than 10 yds. I dont remember seeing a pass breakup this year. Our db's plays so much pussy coverage its not even funny. The corners are consistently giving up 7 yd. cushions, and the safeties cant even tackle, let alone play the pass.

You must have been getting another beer on Fox's gem of a play saturday....one of the few bright spots all day

Its not "pussy" coverage...its not hiding coverages well. tOSU shows too many tendancies on BOTH sides of the ball. It is too easy to scheme against

I didnt get to see the game this weekend, but name me any other situation. Our corners are more concerned w/ limiting the gains of opposing receivers, whereas corners on other teams actually try to play the ball and break up the pass or even intercept it. We seem to be satisfied w/ just tackling the receiver after consistent gains.

edit: as for the pussy coverage, i stand by my statement. why the hell can't our great corners stick w/ receivers from schools like n'western or iowa, not exactly the who's who when it comes to having great wr's. I can understand playing zone against explosive receivers, but do our corners suck so much that we almost never play cover 0/corners on islands so we can blitz?

Well Rob, if Fox for instance is responsible for flats and the offense floods that zone with two receivers, his options to play the ball are limited. As I stated before, the cover 2 look is also cover 4 with rolled corners. I'm sticking to the scheme here and the lack of mixed coverages. When the Bucks had a disciplined pass rush and backers applying pressure via blitz, the scheme was fine...thus far, neither has been present.

Name you any other situation? Have you watched ANY games in the past year? Yobouty himself has a few off the top of my head. Interceptions are usually the result of offensive mistakes...moreso than great defensive plays. The corners are playing within the scheme...if you want to complain about anything, complain about that.
