Costco is always selling gift cards at a discount as well. You can usually buy $100 for 70-80. Sometimes this saves money on christmas gifts around the office.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the travel/vacation options.

I booked Part 1 of my Honeymoon using my future father in-laws Costco Membership. Got an exceptional deal on an all inclusive in Cabo!

I know their cruise deals are excellent too.
They have excellent deals on tires as well, especially if you buy them during one of the many promotions (they cycle between the brands).

What I buy at Costco:

Coleman Natural Uncured Bacon - best bacon I've bought, including butchers.

$6? - 24 organic cage free eggs

$22-24? Kirkland Super Premium Dog Food - cheaper than name brands, primary ingredients are nutritious and good for your dogs (not corn0.

$6ish - 5 lb organic frozen green beans - ends trimmed off, easier and I no longer waste the last chunk of fresh green beans, nor do I have to go buy them as often

$5 - 48 oz Mango peach salsa - self explanatory, one of many store samples that becomes a staple of shopping trips

Tilamook cheese - the 2 year aged cheddar is excellent

$10.45 - Kirkland Signature Frozen Strawberries 6 lbs

$14? - Organic Beef 1 lb - 3 pack

$5 - Quart of Fage Greek Yogurt (Costco made an even better one but it hasn't been in stock for awhile)

What I still buy at Kroger:

romaine lettuce (they have romaine hearts and spinach at good prices at costco, I like the full heads of romaine)

Apples (the Costco ones have the typical wax, Kroger has excellent organic ones)

Fresh produce (parsnips, turnips, cauliflower, many of these aren't at Costco)

Gatorade (they tend to have better and more frequent sales)

The organic beef does not indicate if it is grass fed. Google reveals no answers, only that it used it indicate it now it does not.

I have been there twice. I got and liked.

Kirkland raw Almonds,
Whole roasted turkey breast ~ $13 for a large breast,
chicken sausages,
sweet potato chips,
coffee,
Haas avacados,
Carrots 5lb bag,
Cage Free eggs,
TP ,
Wine, I thought they had a good selection and great prices.

So I guess I should just get an executive membership?
Yup, you either make money (they give you costco store credit after the year is up) for the 2% rewards or they give you back the difference. I'm not sure if the latter happens every year.

I absolutely love the Shearers Reduced Fat Kettle Cooked Potato Chips. they come in a huge resealable bag and are cheap cheap cheap. Also the blue strip tortilla chips come in a large bag and are about $3.50. Ketchup, mustard, syrup, A1 and staples are just an amazing buy. Good stuff in the bakery, as well, if you like red velvet cake, chocolate chip cookies and artisan breads.

We go to Sams since its right up the street from us.

Buy burgers, dog food, cleaning supplies, chicken, frozen strawberries, etc. about the same prices as what's been listed (some higher, some lower than Costco)

Like Jwins, still get veggies and fruit at Kroger

They have a lot of great snack foods. Pop chips, sweet potato chips, even the Veggie Straws are interesting.

They also have great deals on candy, snack bars as well as some unique items, like dried fruit, real fruit strips (basically natural fruit roll ups), etc.

like most, my vote goes to costco. i've had memberships at both, including bj's wholesale, which i think is superior to sam's but a bit below costco.

if you know someone who is a member of costco, just give them some money to purchase gift cards. with these, you don't need to be a member to use them. you can do this either to be a quasi-member or to test the store out.

costco will reimburse you at the end of the year for the difference between what you spent on the membership and what you saved -- that is, of course, if the latter is less than the former. i think josh already mentioned that. i wouldn't be surprised if sam's does the same.

i don't recall what the return policy is at sam's, but i do know that costco will practically reimburse you for any item under any condition, receipt or not.

the bakery, meat, and produce sections at coscto are easily, in my experience, superior to sam's. again, i'm sure that has already been stressed. that being stated, you may find some offerings at sam's that you won't find at coscto, which may not mean much to others but are important to you. just walk through the store before purchasing a membership.

good luck actually saving money. more often than not, you'll go just to buy a specific item or two but walk out spending far more on stuff that you don't really need or normally wouldn't even think of.

oh... if you move to an area without a costco before the membership expires, costco will reimburse you for the full price of the membership. they don't "advertise" this, but it is company policy. don't quote me on this policy as it draws really near your membership anniversary, however.

by the by, costco's big bag of frozen strawberries is outstanding. they are massive strawberries with so much more flavor than the puny strawberries you'll find in the frozen foods section at normal stores. i go through a bag every week or two.
